Trinidadian Soca Star KES And Haitian-born Producer Michaël Brun Merge Cultures With ‘Liki Tiki’

Port-of-Spain meets Port-Au-Prince as Trinidadian soca stars KES (aka Kes the Band) link up with Haitian-born producer Michaël Brun (J Balvin, Mr Eazi) and singer JPerry on “Liki Tiki.” The track, which was co-written and co-produced with Trinidad-based Dwala, is out today on all DSPs via California-based Ineffable Records.

“Liki Tiki” blends a callaloo of Caribbean music genres (soca, kompa, dancehall, reggaeton) together with bilingual lyrics in English and Haitian Creole. The result is a slow-wine anthem that’s sure to have dancers moving across the Caribbean and the broader African Diaspora this summer.

“Liki Tiki is the way I describe our calypso-style rhythms and feel,” says KES frontman Kees Dieffenthaller. “It’s the driving force behind the swing in our music. It’s smooth, sexy and makes you feel good.”

In recent years, both KES and Michaël Brun have emerged as leaders when it comes to championing Caribbean music globally— KES with soca and calypso, the homegrown sounds of Trinidad & Tobago, and Brun with Haitian music genres such as kompa and rara. It was only natural for the two to join forces to merge their islands’ sounds on a track that could resonate across the Caribbean and the broader African diaspora.

“From the moment I was able to link up with Kees, it was clear he cared so much about Trinidadian and Caribbean culture, unifying the Caribbean, and creating a strong bond between us artists and what we’re doing,” Michael Brun says. “KES has the same mission as JPerry and myself. We went from creating this song to forming a strong friendship. Kes is an artist bringing soca to the world and JPerry is bringing Haitian music to the world. The balance feels fresh and rooted. I’m so excited for people to hear it because it came from a place of love.”

“Liki Tiki” is the second single of 2022 from KES, following January’s “Jolene.” Both tracks are set to appear on the band’s upcoming album, coming this Summer on Ineffable Records.

To celebrate the release of “Liki Tiki” and, more broadly, Caribbean music culture at large, KES will launch a series of regular IG Live conversations with friends and collaborators.

In spite of the pandemic, recent times have brought a string of highlights for KES. 2021 saw the band make its U.S. TV debut on Late Night with Steven Colbert, and return to the States for their first tour dates in over two years, including their climactic IzWe concert in New York City, which brought nearly 10,000 fans to Brooklyn’s Boardwalk Lot on Labor Day. In August 2020, they released the live album We Home (Ineffable Records), a project which earned them plaudits in outlets ranging from Essence to The FADER. “Liki Tiki” is their first collaboration with Michael Brun, who has earned world renown over the last decade for his unique fusion of traditional Haitian sounds like rara and kompa with electronic dance music and pop.

Kes Talks Soca Music, Carnival Culture & More On The Breakfast Club

Kes is spreading the good gospel of Caribbean music to the world. The Trinbagonian Soca Superstar recently made his very first appearance on the popular New York-based Radio show, The Breakfast Club alongside Angela Yee & DJ Envy where he spoke very candidly about a lot of things.

During the full interview, Kes explained to DJ Envy and Angela Yee the difference between Calypso & Soca, as he described Soca as ‘the soundtrack of carnivals around the world’. While also giving the host and viewers a little history lesson on how carnival started, what it signifies, and the true culture of carnival.

While talking about his music he describes his particular style as primarily Soca, with a bit of Reggae & Dancehall fused with Pop & Rock elements. Kes even shared a very diverse list of musical influences which included Van Halen, Sting, The Police, Bob Marley, Mighty Sparrow, Mighty Shadow, Ataklan, Marvin Gaye, and even Boyz II Men.

On a more personal note, Kes shared how the pandemic has affected him especially after he has been touring extensively for many years. However,  he explained how much he appreciated getting the time to take a much-needed break, spend time with his daughter and get some long-overdue rest after Trinidad shut down right after carnival 2020.

And soca lovers will also be pleased to hear that Kes has revealed that a new album is already on the way with new releases coming later this year while sharing his views about the possibility of Carnival in 2022. Check out the full interview below!

To date, Kes joins our Bajan Soca Queen, Alison Hinds, as being the only two soca artistes to be interviewed on the popular radio show. Angela even praised Kes for his virtual performance last year during ‘Angela Yee Day’ in 2020.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub hope this is only just the beginning as soca music continues to go global.

Kes Surprises Trinbagonian World Food Prize Winner

2020 Road March Champion, Kes surprised a native of Trinidad and Tobago and citizen of Denmark, Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted recently, as she received the 2021 World Food Prize at the World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony held in the magnificent Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines, Iowa.

On the night, Dr Thilsted was awarded for her “ground-breaking research, critical insights and landmark innovations in developing holistic, nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquaculture and food systems”.

Kes was invited by the organisers to surprise Dr Thilsted – who was formerly a resident of San Fernando where the Dieffenthaller brothers of Kes grew up.

Thilsted had previously listed the band as her favourite act and Kes did not disappoint as he performed for a gathering of over 800 persons representing 75 different countries. Hopping on a flight soon after to return to New York where he’s working on completing a brand new album, Kees Dieffenthaller said:

“It was an honour to celebrate with Dr. Shakuntala as she received the prestigious World Food Award for her exceptional works” said Dieffenhaller. “Being the ‘surprise’ for her and to share a piece of our culture and music with all in attendance was pure joy. Knowing that she was grown and raised in San Fernando was very significant and special to me as well. It was my first time performing in Iowa and I give thanks for the all beautiful places music takes us expected and unexpectedly.”

Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted & Kes

Having commenced her career as the first and only woman in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries on the island of Tobago, Thilsted now serves as the Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health at WorldFish – a global CGIAR research center headquartered in Malaysia. Her work guides WorldFish, as well as other research institutions, major funders, government agencies and public and private organizations to work together to reshape food systems to deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Young researchers whom Thilsted has mentored now use her holistic approach to increase the sustainable production and consumption of nutritious fish and fish-based foods in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

As an adviser to heads of state, ministers, high-level panels, and international boards, she provides direction for research, policies, and practices in pursuit of improved food systems that boost biodiversity, enhance environments, reinforce resilient communities, increase incomes, empower women and provide adequate nutrition for all.  She said:

“I am truly honored to receive the 2021 World Food Prize, and I am deeply humbled to be placed in such distinguished ranks as those of past laureates. Aside from personal joy and gratitude, as a scientist, I feel this award is an important recognition of the essential but often overlooked role of fish and aquatic food systems in agricultural research for development. Fish and aquatic foods offer life-changing opportunities for millions of vulnerable women, children, and men to be healthy and well-nourished.”

Thilsted’s trailblazing research on small native fish species in Bangladesh led to the development of nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquatic food systems at all levels, from the farm to food processing to final consumers, resulting in improved diets for millions of the most vulnerable people in Asia and Africa. Nutrition-sensitive approaches place nutrition and public health at the core of how food is produced, processed, transported, priced, distributed, and consumed.

With a ceremony rivalling that of the Nobel Prize, which its founder Dr Norman Borlaug won in 1970 for his work in global agriculture, each year world-class performers take the stage to honor the World Food Prize Laureate. Past performers have included: Ray Charles, John Denver, Chachi Tadesse, and Kathak Gunjan. Following the Ceremony, the celebration continued at the Laureate Award Dinner, held in the Capitol Rotunda.

Kes Takes Soca To The Essence Festival

Soca music is finally free to make the world happy again and 2020 Road March Champs, Kes are set to make history this weekend, as the only Caribbean act selected to perform on Saturday night at the 26th Essence Festival of Culture. Known as “the party with a purpose”, The Essence Festival is an annual music festival which began in 1995 as a one-time event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine – a popular publication aimed primarily towards African-American women. Subsequently, the Essence Festival became the largest African-American culture and music event in the United States.

For the band of brothers from Trinidad, the festival represents a golden opportunity to showcase their talents as well as the “vibes” of Trinidad and Tobago to a captive, significant and influential American audience:

“Our mission has always been to spread the music and vibrations as far and wide as possible.” Said lead vocalist, Kees Dieffenthaller. “Being a part of the Essence Fest line-up this year gives us the opportunity to share our energy through the music and culture of our beautiful islands, Trinidad and Tobago. So we want everyone to log on, get up and dance and enjoy the infectious energy of soca and calypso music.

“Our goal for this year’s festival,” explained Loreal Lemond, Ashaunna Ayers, and Jameel Spencer of the Essence Fest Talent Team, “was to procure talent and creatives globally, who represent their communities – and in this case their country and genre – in a way that is aligned with Essence Festival’s mission and purpose.”

So why exactly was Kes chosen to perform on Saturday night then? Well, it’s the vibe of course!

“Essence is always on a mission to celebrate all aspects of Black Culture and we are happy to have Kes represent for the international community with a performance that will surely make his home country proud!” Stated Essence Fest’s VP Experiential, Branded Content & Video, Stephanie Dunivan.

While 2020 sidelined live music, the band of brothers remained creative and continued to open doors for Soca music amidst the pandemic, as they produced and presented three live streaming concerts in 2020 and were featured on several mainstream media outlets in the US and the UK in the lead up to those aforementioned concert performances.

Now, with the virus seemingly at bay to a greater extent, the band is gearing up to resume their mission of bringing their music globally.

“We had a fabulous tour planned,” explained one half of the band’s management team, Damon DeGraff, “but the universe clearly had other plans for everyone and we took the extra down-time to not only push the envelope in terms of live streaming presentations but to also craft a new body of work which we consider to be the soundtrack of the future.”

The Essence Fest performance lineup includes notable names such as: DJ Khaled and friends, Davido, Jasmine Sullivan, D-NICE, NeYo, and others. To witness Kes’ groundbreaking performance at Essence Festival this Saturday night from 7 – 10 pm,  please log on to www.essencestudios.com

Top Trini-born Music Producer, Stadic, Continues To Ride The Helm Of Success

After grabbing the attention of the music world by going viral on TikTok with his #StadicFreestlyeChallenge, Stadic, the Trini-born, St. Vincent & Grenadines-raised producer is becoming a growing household name among Caribbean music enthusiasts!

Born Kevin Charles, Stadic’s involvement in music spans eight years. According to him, gravitating towards becoming a producer came out of sheer necessity. As a teacher fresh out of college, in his search for dance music instrumentals, he often came up short. To fill this need, Stadic created the sounds he was looking for. Then, Gary “Icon” John, upon hearing his music, asked if he’d ever considered producing for other people. With that question, Stadic’s interest sparked. While growing up in Union Island, to be noted is that he and Don Tittle opened the island’s first recording studio. Stadic prides himself on breaking rules, experimenting and not subscribing to the norm, though it makes you think: What makes Stadic, Stadic? Let’s get into it.

In the years that followed, Stadic became heavily affiliated with different musical tastes. He and long-time collaborator Jonny Blaze have produced many riddims which mainstream artistes have hopped on. They’ve produced riddims spanning the genres of soca and dancehall including the Hustlers Riddim (Chris Martin, Mavado, Konshens, Preedy) and 2021’s Candy Shack Riddim (Patrice Roberts, Kerwin Du Bois, Destra, Nailah Blackman, Teejay). Other artistes he has also worked with include Bunji Garlin, GBM Neutron, Ishawna,  Shenseea, Vybz Kartel, Fay-Ann Lyons, Reekado Banks, Mr. Killa, to name a few.

Stadic has also collaborated with other producers like Wetty Beatz who he shares a close, business and personal bond (“I’ve always considered Wetty Beatz my little brother”); Captain John, and Grenada’s Adigun who he has worked with for years, (“I’ve done quite a few projects with Adigun, big up to Adigun from Grenada”),.

To fully appreciate Stadic’s unique talent, listen to the following Youtube playlist.

The riddim birthed from Stadic’s viral challenge is the ‘Freestyle Riddim’. About it, Stadic said “our approach is really like those old school Dancehall riddims. You know those riddims, they had a million people on them, so we’re essentially using the same approach. We’re not exactly limiting the amount of songs placed on there.” It includes artistes such as Ding Dong, Collie Buddz, Stefflon Don, Stylo G, Chi Ching Ching, R City, Spice, Safaree and Bunji Garlin. Stadic’s goal in the musical arena is “to bridge the gap between the cultures of the people regionally and the people internationally, and just try to make the entire music space significantly smaller.”

Since going viral, Stadic’s challenge has showcased on some major platforms. These include The Shade Room, BET Music, Hollywood Unlocked, BBC 1xtra, and America’s Hot 97. Future-wise, he’s currently working on his album with a single to be released at the beginning of next month. This will be a collaboration with the Freetown Collective; already loved by the Turn Up producer. The upcoming album will feature many regional and international artistes including Afro B, Patrice Roberts, and Lord Afrixana (featured on Beyonce’s ‘The Gift’ album). Stadic has also hinted about a TV show in the works with a major international network.

Sean Paul Wants To Hear Some “Trinigood” Music Too

Dancehall superstar, Sean Paul has taken notice of the “Trinibad” dancehall movement and is advising the local acts to balance their lyrical content and song topics. Speaking to Overtime Media this week about his new album entitled LiveNLivin, the Grammy Award-winner said the title of this album released on March 12 is a positive affirmation – both for himself and the dancehall genre. He said:

“The album is called Live N Livin to reaffirm that I am alive and living – it’s a positive affirmation to anyone that’s listening to realise that I understand this and also to reaffirm that dancehall music itself is live and living – even in different territories such as the Trinibads and these places. I have heard Prince Swanny and dem boy dey.”
Asked for his opinion on the Trinibad movement, Sean Paul saluted local acts like “Prince Swanny”, “Jahllano” and others for keeping dancehall music alive and telling the stories of life in Trinidad. However, in light of the deaths of several of these local acts over the past year, he also advised the young singers to “maintain ah balance” and to tell all sides of their stories. He said:
“This music is to tell people what’s going on in our lives and I encourage people to talk the truth every time. A lot of time now, we kinda embellishing or over-exaggerating or over glorifying a violent type of lifestyle like it is the realist thing – like we get up every morning and drink tea and buss gun inna boy head – and that ain’t true, or else there would be none of us left on earth. Scene?”

“So, that’s my only thing with the badness: meh just wanna big up everybody who does music and says yes, you must reflect the badness that is in society, cause yeah, because that is what the music is for, but also tell the real story. Tell the story when you shoot somebody and have to go hide inna hill and you can’t see your baby mother nor your baby for months, yuh understand? Tell the story when police come to look for you and you frighten and you paro (paranoid) because you can’t even trust your best friend cause them will sell you out cause them know what yuh do. So tell that story too, not just the ones where you have the baddest thing and no boy can’t test. Cause if they test I. there’s pure problems and violence!”

Born Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques in 1973, to mixed parentage in Jamaica (his parents had Portuguese, Chinese, and Jamaican forebears), “Sean Paul” was an excellent swimmer who also played water polo and later represented the Jamaican national team in the latter. After making a name for himself on the regional dancehall circuit, he broke into the global mainstream in the early 2000s with pop-friendly party jams like “Get Busy” from his Grammy-winning Dutty Rock album, plus the chart-topping smash “Temperature”.

His latest album LiveNLiving was released on March 12 and features traditional dancehall production with a stellar cast of collaborators such as: Buju Banton, Damian Marley, Mavado, Busy Signal, Suku Ward, Serani, Govana, Intence, Masicka, Skillibeng, Quash, Chi Ching Ching, Jesse Royal, Sutu Bless, Luga Man and Rassa Joy. The father of two is also scheduled to release another album later this year (with more international collaborations) entitled Scorcha and will host his first live streaming concert for 2021 on May 8 from Jamaica.

Orange Sky’s 25th Anniversary Show Electrifies An International Audience

POS, Trinidad (Sonique Solutions) – Last Saturday (March 27th) Island Rockers Orange Sky commemorated 25 years as a musical unit in fine style with a high-quality virtual production presented by Carib Beer.
