Spice, Shenseea & Sean Paul Amongst Jamaicans Nominated For 2022 Grammy Awards

Spice, Shenseea, and Sean Paul are amongst the list of Jamaicans nominated at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Yes, with the recent announcement of the official 64th Annual Grammy Awards nominees, Jamaicans and by extension the Caribbean, have been celebrating as some of Reggae’s and Dancehall’s music top stars have been nominated. And just in case you missed it, Caribbean Entertainment Hub is here to give you the full breakdown of our Jamaican nominees along with their respective categories.

Kicking it off in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category, this year’s list included the Queen of Dancehall, Spice with her debut album titled ‘TEN’ which was released in August 2021. This is also a history-making moment because it is the first time that a hardcore Female Dancehall artist has been nominated for the Grammy awards.

Spice

Spice

Also nominated in this category is Reggae artiste Etana with her second Grammy nomination for her album ‘Pamoja’. This is, however, not Etana’s first time being nominated for a Grammy, as she also created some history in 2018 being the first woman to get a nomination in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category in more than two decades. At that time she was also the fourth woman to ever get nominated for this Grammy award.

Also, landing his first-ever Grammy nomination is Jesse Royal for his album ‘Royal’, which was released in June 2021. And Sean Paul received his sixth Grammy nomination for his album ‘Live N Livin’. Sean Paul is also a previous Grammy Award winner for his album ‘Dutty Rock’ in 2004. And lastly, Gramps Morgan was nominated for his album ‘Positive Vibration’ which was released in July 2021. Gramps, a previous nominee and winner with his group Morgan Heritage who previously won the award in 2015 for their album ‘Strictly Roots’.

Fun Fact: The winner in this category for 2020 was Reggae’s music newcomer and star, Koffee who made history as the first female and youngest artist to win the award for her album ‘Rapture’.

Moving onto the Jamaican artists and producers who have been nominated for the ‘Album of the Year’ category which includes Shenseea, Beam, Masego, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, and more making them the first Jamaican artiste to be nominated in this category.

Shenseea

Shenseea

These nominations have been made possible after the Recording Academy stated clearly that if an album is up for ‘Album Of The Year’, then all credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album are automatically nominated. Previously, the Grammy rule stated that all of these music professionals had to be credited with 33 percent or more of playing time (on the album), in order to be nominated.

Edited: By virtue of the new rules, Shenseea is only nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ for ‘Donda’.  Her (3) other contributions to Grammy-nominated albums in the genre categories would render her a participant, according to the Grammy guidelines (see below).

  1. Kanye West’s- ‘Donda’ for Album Of The Year
  2. She is also credited for her songwriting and vocals on ‘OK OK Pt 2′ and ‘Pure Souls’
  3. Her collaboration alongside with Jamaican-American singer Masego in the Best Progressive R&B Album with his EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay.
  4. And she is also a participant in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, for Major Lazer Music Is The Weapon (Reloaded) which features her track on ‘Tiny’ alongside Beam.

Other Jamaican artistes and producers making the cut this year include:

  1. Busy Signal on the single ‘Sun Comes Up’ alongside JoeBoy, and two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley on ‘Can’t Take It From Me’.
  2.  Beam was also featured on two more tracks, namely ‘Bam Bam’ with French Montana, and ‘Rave de Favela’ with MC Lan and Anitta. Beam also contributed to Justin Bieber’s album ‘Justice’, which received nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
  3. Buju Banton is also credited on Kanye West’s 27-track set on the love song ‘Believe What I Say’
  4. Jamaican producer IzyBeats-the beatmaker on Koffee’s international breakout hit song ‘Toast’ and co-produced ‘Silver Tongue Devil’ alongside Corbett and Chris Madine, He also contributed to a second song on the EP titled ‘Yebo/Sema’.
  5.  Masego and Jamaican producer J.L.L., whose 2014 beat was sampled on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ (CLB) album, will both share a part of the victory if the Canadian rapper wins in the Best Rap Album category.
  6. In the Best Global Music Album category, Nigerian star WizKid is among five nominees for his album ‘Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition’.  The project features contributions from Jamaican artists Damian Jr. Gong’ Marley on the song ‘Blessed’, and rising artist Projexx, on the song ‘True Love’ with Tay Iwa.

A celebratory congratulations goes out to all the Jamaican artistes who were nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy awards. The final round of voting for the 64th Annual Grammy awards will begin on December 6th, 2021, and end on January 5th, 2022.

Spice Talks Wealth Creation & More With Forbes Magazine

The Queen of Dancehall, Grace Hamilton aka ‘Spice’ is getting candid in her latest interview with Forbes Magazine. Yes, we said Forbes Magazine!

The ‘Go Down Dey’ singer who recently released her debut album ‘Ten’ shared with Forbes how she has maintained a successful music career over the years while wearing many entrepreneurial hats. During the interview, Spice also talked about breaking the cycle of generational poverty and creating wealth for herself and her family.

The born and bred Jamaican singer, shared what it was like growing up in Portmore, Jamaica with her mom and five siblings after her dad passed away when she was nine years old. Grace recalls her mother struggling and working hard to provide for her and her siblings.

“I tell my mom that she’s my inspiration because I watched her struggle with all of us. She truly made something out of nothing. My mother would cook one pound of rice and make sure that we all were full. We felt like we had ten pounds of rice! I come from humble beginnings, and I managed to overcome all of the adversity and boss up. On top of that, I lost my house due to a fire when I was in high school. I remember coming back from school, and my house was gone. My tagline now is, “From Homeless to Owning Houses.” Now, I own multiple homes between Jamaica and Atlanta. My journey has been a rough one, but I always tell people, “It’s not how you start the race. It’s how you end that. matters.”

Today, as a Billboard-charting artist with over 20 years in the business and thriving Businesswoman, the Dancehall Diva is sharing her rags to riches story to encourage anyone living in poverty, that they too can work hard and get out of it. Listing her many businesses which include her own label ‘Spice Official Entertainment’, a clothing line ‘Graci Noir’, and her ‘Faces & Laces line which features wigs, make-up, and beauty products.

“My plan as an artist was to become successful. I always wanted to be unique, energized, and keep people on their feet. My music makes you want to move. That’s why I continually reinvent things and stay consistent. Many people don’t know, but I started when I was young and made a name for myself. When you hear Spice, there is a dancehall song that most people remember. Whether it’s old or new, my goal is to make good music that will last forever.”

When it comes to maintaining and accumulating wealth, Spice shares that it takes time and discipline.

I believe that it is important to create multiple income streams to build wealth. I have multiple streams of income and various businesses…

Managing multiple businesses isn’t easy. As an entrepreneur, you have to make the best and sometimes hard decisions about hiring and firing. You can’t tag along with people who don’t have the same vision as you or share the same dream.”

When asked what inspires her drive and inspiration behind her hard work, Spice explained:

“My past has inspired them. The fact that I’ve been so poor and I never want to go back there. I am also a mother with two kids and I’m working diligently to break the generational curse of being born into poverty. I’m still working hard to create a bright future for all of us.”

And lastly, we all know when it comes to empowering and encouraging women, Spice is all for it! This is what advice she wishes to share with women as they push boundaries and pursue their dreams:

“Never to take no for an answer. As long as you believe in yourself and your product, go for it—even if others don’t believe in it. Two things I live by are prayer and hard work. It doesn’t matter what you have right now. Pray hard, work hard, and you will be successful.”

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub, will like to congratulate Spice on all her success thus far and we know that she surely has a lot more in store. If you haven’t listened to her brand new album ‘Ten’, you should definitely check it out!

Nicki Minaj’s Vaccine Tweet Lands Her In Hot Seat

The White House has entered the chat.

It seems like Nicki Minaj had a case of ‘Twitter fingers’ earlier this week which has landed her in a very public and very hot, hot seat.  Currently, Minaj, who is a native of Trinidad and Tobago, has the attention of prominent figures in high places in society. The first, her island’s Health Minister, Dr. Terrence Deyalsingh, and secondly, the United States’ White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki; and to be honest it isn’t in a flattering light.

Apparently, the Queen of Rap dominated headlines earlier this week on September 13th when she posted a tweet to her more than 22.6 million followers that the Met Gala required attendees to be vaccinated, and that she’d get the shot when “I feel I’ve done enough research”. Then, later that day, Nicki Minaj told her millions of followers a tale of the effect of the Covid-19 vaccine taken by a friend of a family member in Trinidad.

Minaj in the post said that the friend was left with swollen testicles and he was said to be impotent. Immediately after her tweet, several people pointed out that that particular “side effect” is completely unrelated to Covid-19 vaccines and it was highly possible that the individual contracted an STD. Folks were saying this was especially plausible as it could have been his “last hurrah” seeing as his girlfriend called off their wedding.  Also nodding to the lack of relation between the friend’s condition and the Covid-19 vaccine were several verified accounts, among them scientists and doctors.

In Trinidad, Dr. Deyalsingh chalked it up as a false claim, the Minister had this to say: “As we stand now, there is absolutely no reported such side effect or adverse event of testicular swelling in Trinidad, Deyalsingh continued, “Unfortunately, we wasted so much time yesterday running down this false claim.”

Accused of spreading misinformation about the vaccine, Minaj revealed that she was invited to the White House to talk about the vaccine with Dr. Anthony Fauci and Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy. However, according to the White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, that was simply not the case.

Psaki said; “We offered a call with Nicki Minaj and one of our doctors to answer questions she had about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. This is pretty standard and something we do all the time”. Additionally, she said, “I want you all to know that we engage all the time with people who have big public platforms or profiles”.

In an interview on Tuesday, Dr. Fauci who is the leading infectious disease expert publicly dismissed the swollen testicles claim being linked to the vaccines: “There’s no evidence that it happens, nor is there any mechanistic reason to imagine that it would happen”. Painted as a liar? Nicki Minaj addressed these claims via Instagram Live earlier today, September 16th, and was careful to announce that she has proof of the White House’s invitation.  You see, sitting in on that call with her, according to Mrs. Petty, was her publicist Joseph “Joe” Carozza and her new manager who is also Shenseea’s and The Weeknd’s, Wassim ‘Sal’ Slaiby.

Jamaican Dancehall Artiste Spice & Macka Diamond

Though, making their support of the rapper known were Dancehall Queen, Spice, and veteran in the Dancehall ting, Macka Diamond. In the words of Spice,

“Onika you are under attack because you’re black and intelligent. When we are too educated we become a problem to society. May God watch over you and cover every step you take”.

Whereas Macka Diamond expressed herself by saying,

United we stand divided we fall.. Most black people still don’t get you are a strong-minded black woman and you are blessed God is in control blessed love stay focus and prayed up”.

Whew chile, this is alot to process but we’ll love to hear your thoughts on this entire situation. Do you think Nicki Minaj claims are false? Feel free to sound off in the comments below!

Dancehall Bonanza In May

Two of Dancehall & Reggae’s music biggest collaborations for 2021 were recently released on the same day; making May a bonanza for dancehall music.

First up, we have DJ Khaled bringing some of Jamaica’s legends Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Barrington Levy together on a track for the first time ever, with his brand new release ‘Where You Come From’. Back in April 2021, the Grammy Award-Winning American Record producer and DJ sent fans into a frenzy after he touched down in Jamaica to complete his latest project and 12th studio album ‘Khaled Khaled’. As fans anxiously guessed who the artistes featured on the track would be, let’s just say that fast forward to now, it was well worth the wait.

In less than five days since its official release, the history-making collaboration has already racked up over 3.8 million views on YouTube and counting. ‘Where You Come From’ is an aggressive, in-your-face, and dominating track that commands your attention from beginning to end. And with the calibre of talent compiled on this track, it is more than safe to say that each artiste delivered and did their thang from beginning to end. And if a cast of Jamaica’s top talent wasn’t enough for the audio, yes the visuals were also shot in Jamaica as well. See full video below!

The We The Best CEO is definitely having the time of his life since the official release of the album which features (14) singles with collabs and features from some of music top stars like Jay Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, Drake, Diddy, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Cardi B, Migos, Megan Thee Stallion, H.E.R, Da Baby and so much more, as well as some of Jamaica’s Finest. We’re just extremely happy to see some of our own getting the recognition that they rightfully deserve.

And the May Music Madness didn’t quite end there, as Jamaican Dancehall Queen Spice, dropped her highly anticipated new release ‘Go Down Deh’ which also features some of Jamaica’s Dancehall music royalty, Shaggy and Sean Paul.

Spice, Sean Paul & Shaggy ‘Go Down Deh’, Official Music Video

With over 2.5 million views and counting since its release a few days ago, the saucy dancehall single has already begun to dominate global reggae charts debuting at #1 on US and Israeli iTunes Reggae, #2 in the UK, Italy and Canada, and Top 10 on Apple Music, iTunes and Deezer in multiple countries including Japan, Jamaica (#1 on Apple Music), Germany and the Netherlands.

Sharing during an interview recently, Spice shared that she decided to collaborate with these two legends because she knew that it would be impactful and she believes that they are a representation of the Dancehall genre and they need to show that unity, strength and that together they are a force to be reckoned with. But can we all admit that we’re not even one bit surprised? We knew this collaboration was going to be nothing short of pure fire when Spice revealed that this collaboration was on its way a few months ago after announcing her highly anticipated debut album, ‘TEN’, which is carded to be released on July 30, 2021.

Jamaica’s Spice Receives Backlash Over Meghan Markle’s Comment?

It seems like Jamaican Dancehall Queen Spice has been receiving some serious backlash for her recent comments on social media about the now trending Meghan Markle’s interview.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently sat down with talk show titan Oprah Winfrey in what many are describing as one of the most revealing and controversial interviews to date.  During the interview, Meghan revealed that there were concerns brought by members of the Royal family about the complexion of their son Archie.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Spice, who has been very opinionated in the past with her views concerning the issues of colourism and racism, took to Instagram commenting the following:

“Imagine these words coming from Meghan who’s a lighter shade than I am and you can only imagine what I went through,” #blackhypocrisy

For those who may not recall, ‘Black Hypocrisy’ is the name of Spice’s 2018 release where she opened up about her own personal struggle dealing with the discrimination she experienced because of the colour of her skin.

However, things exploded on Twitter when Spice comments started trending online. The ‘Frenz’ singer started receiving backlash with many claiming that Spice was being insensitive and inconsiderate with her comparison of the two situations. Some even claimed that the Dancehall artiste was looking for attention because she has low self-esteem and doesn’t like the colour of her skin. (Some very strong opinions we might add).

It wasn’t before long that fellow Jamaican songstress, Sevanna came to Spice defense online, tweeting the following:

“I need all the lightskins to stfu about Spice, immediately.”

“I would investigate that Spice feels muted and this is why she is being loud at every opportunity. Let her talk. Idgaf if it mek sense to unu,”

“What I see is that Spice didn’t get a shade name right and her intelligence immediately called into question and dismissed. She went on to highlight that her experiences are 10x worse vs Meghan as a dark-skinned black woman and was told to be quiet because it’s not the right space and time.”

“These are the same reasons anti-black movements have used to silence and gloss over issues surrounding racism and colourism. As a dark-skinned black woman myself, it hits home to see her voice being quieted. What’s more important here, the delivery or the message? I think we have to maintain that no matter how it is expressed we should give some consideration and compassion to dark-skinned black women when we speak about what hurts us.”

So what are your views on the backlash that Spice has been receiving for her comments? Have you seen the full sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?

What are your thoughts on all this? Let us know in the comments below!

Spice, Shaggy & Sean Paul Dancehall Collab In The Making?

It seems like Jamaican Dancehall Queen, Spice has a major historic collaboration on the way with two of Dancehall’s music heavyweights, Shaggy and Sean Paul.

Spice Wins At The 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Jamaican Dancehall Queen Spice can now add MTV Award winner to her list of achievements. The awards was held on Saturday 15th June, 2019 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

The VH1’s ‘Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’ franchise walked away with the ‘Reality Royalty Award’ at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards after beating out the following nominees in their category: The Challenge, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation and The Bachelor and Vanderpump Rules.

Spice and cast members Bambi, Lil Scrappy and Karlie Redd

In 2018, Spice (Grace Hamilton) became the first dancehall artist to join the successful Love & Hip-Hop franchise. She quickly experience difficulties because of her heavy Jamaican accent but her determination and fierce attitude soon made her a favorite of the fans.

Many were surprised by the Love & Hip Hop win including the cast and Spice herself, however, she believes it is a great accomplishment and was very happy and excited for the win.

She shared pictures and videos of the night’s events with her fans on her social media including meeting MTV’s ‘Wilding Out’ host Nick Cannon who also won on the night in the ‘Best Host’ Category.

Nick Cannon and Spice at the MTV Movie and TV Awards

Outside of consistently delivering those hits since bursting onto the dancehall scene in the early 2000s, Spice has been working hard building a name for herself and expanding her brand. In November 2018 she released her Captured mixtape and controversial single ‘Black Hypocrisy’ .

As major success continues for the Dancehall Diva in 2019, we at Caribbean Entertainment Hub would like to congratulate Spice for her continued success and would like to wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Spice: Queen Or Mean

Captured was the Theme of the recent Spice album launching held in Kingston 6, Jamaica on November 7th, 2018.

Entering the venue, I was uncertain of why ‘Captured’ but as the show progressed, we got the chance to hear the moving testimonies of her childhood and growing up without major necessities. She also mentioned the ten-year binding contract she had with VP Records which she believed held her back as her talent grew.

To kick-start the question and answer session, Spice was brought onto the stage sitting on a “White Golden Throne” carried by two muscular men as the fans erupted with excitement. Mediated by the host Miss Kitty, Spice answered random questions from the media & audience at large. She sounded very scripted and monotonous repeating the same sentiments about her controversial photo release for the song ‘Black Hypocrisy’

As the night prolonged, Spice asked for the microphone and delivered a few of her RAUNCHY performances that the fans all knew and loved. She also took the liberty to highlight young Rising Star, Monifa Goss and her All-Female Band ADAZEH.

With all that said, my disappointment could have never been greater in a person that I don’t know personally. Spice took an interview with one of her harshest critics to the extreme by degrading him and his mother with one of the most derogatory terms used in Jamaica. Due to her miss informed and ignorant status, she was not even capable of completing the interview in a state of professionalism, which she obviously lack.

Despite being a woman, public figure and mother of two children including a daughter, she demonstrated that she has no moral compass. Her behavior towards the media personnel was disgusting and unacceptable. But I guess that is what “put food on the table”.

Spice,…one step forward…..ten steps backward.
