The Future Of Soca & Calypso In Guyana Is In Good Hands

This weekend saw the virtual airing of the junior and senior monarchs and it was quite the spectacle as the newcomers painted an undeniably brilliant future of the local music industry.  While much of the fanfare surrounded the senior categories, the junior categories also came through with some major excitement. While the seniors had what is being dubbed one of the most epic battles to ever be witnessed in monarch history, the juniors showed that they are ready to take it to the next level as well.

First-time contestant OKC took home the crown in both the junior calypso and soca monarch and understandably took the prize for the best newcomer as well. OKC in a pre-competition interview with Caribbean Entertainment Hub expressed varying levels of confidence at winning both competitions and pledged to give it his all in a bid to cop the coveted crown. His Soca entitled ‘Brawling’ factors the Coronavirus pandemic and how the lockdown has left a thirst within the populous for entertainment and the “just got out of jail feeling” that it emits when outside reopens.  His calypso is entitled ‘Polos and Ts’ the song brings a modern perspective to the social commentary geared genre usually dominated by political satire.

When asked about the inspiration for this OKC stated that he wants to revive the calypso art form. He sighted that calypso is losing favor with younger audiences but hopes that with more modern and relatable topics he can attract millennials to the genre and preserve its future.

Runners up to OKC included young Akeem Alexander who took third in both competitions this would be Akeem Alexanderthe 21-year-old’s last time competing as a junior and he wanted to leave his mark on the competition. In a pre-competition interview with the Hub, the confident young artiste expressed feelings of exhaustion from what he described as his hardest training regiment. His calypso features themes of child abuse from the perspective of a child, while his Soca like many others refers to the ongoing global pandemic with a reflective look at life before the pandemic.  Young Alexander sounded an official warning to the titans of the senior class since he will be contesting as a senior from next year. He stated that he is looking forward to competing with many of the artistes that inspired him and shaped him into the artiste he is today.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub wish to congratulate all the young talent that continues to show that Guyana’s entertainment is in good hands. The future of soca and calypso in the ‘land of many waters’ looks bright. We look forward to keeping you our faithful readers frequently updated as the Guyana story unfolds.

Nailah Blackman’s Virtual Concert ‘FIAH’ Was Pure Fire

Emojis of flames abound on the chat-board throughout Nailah Blackman’s virtual ‘FIAH’ concert. The consensus was clear, ‘FIAH’ was hot; some even expressed “Pure Fire”. Also, in abundance were emojis of hearts expressing love for the ‘Watermelon Gyal’ as she danced and sang her way deeper into the hearts of many and made fans anew.

The theme ‘FIAH’ presented itself throughout the show: In the backdrops and stage lightings which created the ambience. In the dancers’ outfits and their choreography synchronizing with Nailah’s arching, bending, and swirling dance moves. In Nailah’s vocal tone and expressiveness; the slower the tempo of the song, the deeper she dug inside to bring out her inner flame, which created magic with that unique instrument she is blessed with. And when joined on stage by Kes to perform ‘Work Out’, the chemistry between the two was explosive as they give a more sensual feel and meaning to the song played at a slower tempo and sang with so much tenderness. This performance among many was worth the time viewing.

Kes & Nailah Blackman

‘FIAH’ was not only hot, but it was also a very well packaged product that showcased Nailah as a unique artist, in more ways than one, who is ready to take soca to the world. Using her beauty, charming personality, and dance moves, she commanded the stage while singing and narrating the show. Nailah is creating her own niche in music, and with hard work and dedication, she is sure to reach her ultimate destination. For she has surrounded herself with a competent management team and talented musician that seems up to the task.

Also performing were Patrice Roberts, Ravi B, Sammy Jo, Pan extraordinaire- Mr. Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe, and new Dancehall sensation, Tafari. They were all well received by the online viewers.

The Hub caught up with Nailah before the concert, and gained some of her insights, and future plains; the interview can be read in the related article below.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to praise Nailah Blackman and her management team for their professional production ‘FIAH’. Jamal Slocombe: Bajan Talent On The Rise

At just 22 years of age, Jamal ‘J.Slo’ Slocombe has quickly become one to watch on the Barbadian soca circuit.

Despite his youth, music is nothing new to the talented singer. “I have been performing for as long as I can remember. I started in the church, which I am still actively involved in. However, my first performance on the national stage was at 10 years old at the Spirit of the Nation Show,” he shared.

Jamal Slocombe, like other artistes, draws his musical inspiration and motivation from many sources. “I have huge respect for Red Plastic Bag, John King and Mighty Gabby. I’ve had the pleasure to work with all three of these icons. However, much of my musical influence I have to attribute to Johnny Koimen and Carlyn Leacock who were very instrumental in my development,” Jamal divulged.

Soca has definitely provided a stepping stone for Jamal. In this year’s 2019 Crop Over competitions, he made it his mission to have a great time on stage and provide the energy which soca fans so greatly desire. “I enjoyed this year in particular because I decided to not focus on competition and have fun. I think whilst I did so, the audience felt the same way. I am very grateful with the results of this Crop Over Season.”

Despite his successes, Jamal noted that he has experienced his share of career challenges. A few years ago, he entered the local Junior Monarch competition expectant of a big win. However, this was not to be. “I did not win or place in Junior Monarch the year I entered and it caused much debate across Barbados. I was broken in spirit, but thanks to the support and encouragement from many Barbadians I was able to comeback harder and stronger. The greatest lesson I learned was: fall nine times, get back up ten.”

Through the roller-coaster of the music business, Jamal acknowledges that it is vital for him to remain grounded through the assistance of his team. Like a real granny’s boy, Jamal credits the leading ladies in his life for who he is today. “ I have a really strong team and support system from my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.” While recognising the many others who help him to realise his dreams, Jamal said, “It takes a team to make the dream work.”

While soca is his love, Jamal Slocombe wants us all to know that he has much more musical  diversity to bring. “I recorded an album in New York just over a year ago which the final touches are being worked on as we speak. However, by October I’d have a new track out; produced by Chris Allman. I think the direction of releasing music without the restriction of any season is important. We are building an industry, and if we are going to hope for our music to penetrate we cannot expect to create music for eight weeks of an entire year.”

Kwasi Ace: Guyana lyrical Genius

Guyana’s Music Industry was recently rocked when recording artiste Lill Million released a “dis” track  targeting some of the biggest music acts in the country. The  tumultuous piece took aim at popular artistes such as Jumo Primo and Kwasi Ace. Many artistes have already released counters to the controversial track but not many packed the proverbial punch of Kwasi Ace’s response. Kwasi Ace wrote and recorded an epic lyrical dissemination that called out Lill Million on everything from his intellectual capacity to his issues with colourism and skin bleaching and his alleged copying of Jamaican Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel. Caribbean Entertainment Hub Caught up with the super star and spoke about his life and career in the arts and of course the recent controversy.

Kwasi Ace whose real name is Kwasi Edmonson told Caribbean Entertainment Hub that he discovered his love for the arts during his early years performing at state event while attending St. Margrets Primary School. It was, however, his older brother’s gift of a Bounty Killer Cassette in his teenage years that would unlock his penchant for composition. Kwasi Ace would continue to perform throughout his time at Richard Ishmael Secondary School and would subsequently be signed with UPP Management from where his career in the arts blossomed. He became a household name and would perform at shows all over the country and open for many major acts such as: Beenie Man, Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin and American recording Artiste Akon. He also won the Coveted Carib Soca Monarch Crown with his Hit song “Still in the Game”. The Entertainer remarked the win as one of the proudest moments of his illustrious career.

Kwasi Ace recalled his first recording was done with a radio station under the management of Radio announcer Stan Gouvia. The song was recoded with an RNB group that he had formed while in High School. He would later record one of his most recognizable hits to-date entitled “Stupid Questions” under the advice of Comedian Chow Pow. The song was written and recorded at Brutal Tracks Studios for the comedy show “Mori j’von Comedy Jam. “ many recordings followed at Brutal Tracks studio included an unfinished recording called “same thing” with which he had entered the Soca Monarch Competition that year. He met Joel Browne Later in his career and under his advice would record on many popular tracks.

You can’t mention Guyanese music without saying Kwasi Ace. One of Guyana’s popular artiste, he was dubbed by many the lyricist because of his penchant for brilliant compositions. He fuses poetic rhyming schemes, with story telling quality to create a unique sound. Another stroke of genius that separates this artiste from his peers is comedy. Kwasi Ace doubles as a stand-up comic and would induce a lot of that comedic styling into his music.  He opined that his music caters to all audiences since he creates content that speak to pressing societal issues such as culture, race, hate, prejudice and politics in a manner that is absolutely entertaining.

The Married father of three told Caribbean Entertainment Hub that his life outside of Music does not exist, since, music is his life. He explained that he however loves to spend his down time with his family remarking on the closeness of his relationship with his sister and the integral role he plays in her life and that of her children. He further stated that his friends are the same as before he became famous and so the regular meet up for drinks and lighthearted bantering is of course a vital part of his routine.

Kwasi said that one of the biggest challenges of his career was dealing with his stage Fright. He explained that though performing from a tender age his constant stage freight would limit him and keep him from many major performance opportunities.  Kwasi told us that he learned to rely on comedy for this issue since he realized that a cleverly crafted comedic ice breaker could do wonders to lighten a mood and therefore aid with his stage freight.  When asked why he chose to respond to the “ the controversial piece by fellow artiste lill million, Kwasi had this to say “didn’t want to respond to him but after he got on radio and said what he sang about was facts I decided to record a song but held from releasing it. But then he was saying I did a song but was scared to release it because I knew his was better. Also being known for your lyrical abilities and not answering wasn’t a good look.”

Kwasi Ace closed by saying that he would advise anyone endeavoring to become a musician to be disciplined, focus and practice every day. “Only you can keep you from achieving your goals and don’t do it if you don’t love it and perform like it’s your last always.”  Caribbean Entertainment Hub Hopes to continue following the progress of this artiste as he continues to grow and mainstream Guyanese music.

Machel Montano & Ashanti premieres ‘The Road’ Music Video

It’s a Summer Carnival Fiesta as the King of Soca, Machel Montano and Grammy Award-winning Singer, Ashanti releases their brand new music video for their hit soca collab ‘The Road’.

According to Billboard, the two initially connected back in 2015 after Ashanti performed at Wet Fete Weekend in Tobago and decided to include a cover of Machel’s hit single ‘Like Ah Boss’ during her set. She later posted a clip of the cover on her Instagram and tagged Machel, who then suggested a collaboration.

Fast forward to present, the collab is now a reality after the successful release of their energetic soca and EDM (electronic dance music) fused track, ‘The Road’ which was produced by Travis World and recorded at the Brooklyn’s Rawlston Recording Studio. Machel further shocked his fans earlier this year when he announced that Ashanti will be performing at his annual Carnival concert extravaganza ‘Machel Monday’.

Ashanti and Machel performing at ‘Machel Monday’ 2019

Although it was her first time doing soca music and experiencing Trinidad Carnival, Ashanti definitely embraced the music and culture with ease. During Machel’s interview with Billboard, he shared that he initially had Rihanna in mind for the single, but the timing wasn’t right for her. So he decided that Ashanti was a great choice because he wanted an artiste from her market to sing a song aimed at our market (the soca world) and ‘The Road’ definitely delivered that. Ashanti also stated that she feels blessed to have fully experienced Trinidad’s Carnival and record a soca song with an icon of the genre.

The music video depicts the picturesque carnival activities as experienced by masqueraders parading through the streets of Port of Spain and was filmed at various carnival events that Machel and Ashanti attended including J’ouvert and Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Scenes were also shot on Ash Wednesday at Trinidad’s Tyrico Beach where Ashanti is seen in a headdress adorned with purple, yellow and teal feathers and a string bikini, embellished with multi-coloured beads. The video was directed by Canadian Music Video director- Director X and also features a surprise guest cameo from World Record Holder, Usian Bolt.

A true cultural expression filled with love and unity, and definitely a giant step for soca music in the right direction towards the global stage. With several upcoming performances lined up for Machel Montano and Ashanti, we at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will be keeping you updated as their journey continues.
