Shenseea The ‘Trending Gyal’ Will Be Paying For Two Dropouts To Go Back To College

Shenseea is forever living up to her title as the Trending Gyal! Even before the release of her debut album, ALPHA, she has been in the spotlight. Recently creating a stir with P. Diddy who she’s working with, and hitting the Billboard Music Awards with her son where she was a presenter, I’d say she’s been pretty on-brand.

Earlier today, on what she’s crowned “YengDay”, she took to her Twitter account and wrote to her followers that she’d be giving two people a second chance.  Particularly, “two college dropouts in Jamaica” who she’ll be sending back to college to get their degree! However, in order to call this second chance their own, all interested folk are to provide proof that in fact they “had to stop because of financial difficulties”. This venture hits close to home as Shenseea herself had to drop out of college in her final year because she couldn’t cover the tuition.

With YengDay, which is her way of hugging her fans in pure appreciation for their support, she made the vow to cover the tuition of two deserving Jamaicans. YengDay began last year, 2021, and is a nod to the release date of the song, “ShenYeng Anthem”.  “I asked God to bless me so I can help to bless others. Imma always do just that, as he continues to do so!” the ShenYeng tweeted after making her announcement.

Shenseea

Shenseea was also made the 2022 Music Ambassador for the WNBA team, the Connecticut Sun. This comes as a result of her song “Sun Comes Up” on her debut album, ALPHA. About how she feels about this move, Shenseea said, “I am especially honored to be a part of something that supports other strong women, and this collaboration represents everything that I want my music to be-music that empowers and uplifts people.” The song which features her son, Rajeiro Lee, will be played during the Sun’s home games. In the words of the team: “Sun Comes Up, an inspirational song about persistence and determination in the face of adversity, in addition to having the organization’s name in the title, the song could not be more fitting for the Connecticut Sun franchise as it seeks to take hold of the elusive WNBA championship.”

Shenseea recently came into heat for what was termed “lewd lyrics” in her collaborated single “Lick” with Megan Thee Stallion. According to her, she said the song did “exactly what I put it out to do: for you to talk, to stir up controversy”, which, to be honest, it did. Shenseea is set to kick off her European Tour on June 19th in Malta and word on the street is that she’s already begun her sophomore album which she says will be “completely different”.

Spice, Shenseea & Sean Paul Amongst Jamaicans Nominated For 2022 Grammy Awards

Spice, Shenseea, and Sean Paul are amongst the list of Jamaicans nominated at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Yes, with the recent announcement of the official 64th Annual Grammy Awards nominees, Jamaicans and by extension the Caribbean, have been celebrating as some of Reggae’s and Dancehall’s music top stars have been nominated. And just in case you missed it, Caribbean Entertainment Hub is here to give you the full breakdown of our Jamaican nominees along with their respective categories.

Kicking it off in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category, this year’s list included the Queen of Dancehall, Spice with her debut album titled ‘TEN’ which was released in August 2021. This is also a history-making moment because it is the first time that a hardcore Female Dancehall artist has been nominated for the Grammy awards.

Spice

Spice

Also nominated in this category is Reggae artiste Etana with her second Grammy nomination for her album ‘Pamoja’. This is, however, not Etana’s first time being nominated for a Grammy, as she also created some history in 2018 being the first woman to get a nomination in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category in more than two decades. At that time she was also the fourth woman to ever get nominated for this Grammy award.

Also, landing his first-ever Grammy nomination is Jesse Royal for his album ‘Royal’, which was released in June 2021. And Sean Paul received his sixth Grammy nomination for his album ‘Live N Livin’. Sean Paul is also a previous Grammy Award winner for his album ‘Dutty Rock’ in 2004. And lastly, Gramps Morgan was nominated for his album ‘Positive Vibration’ which was released in July 2021. Gramps, a previous nominee and winner with his group Morgan Heritage who previously won the award in 2015 for their album ‘Strictly Roots’.

Fun Fact: The winner in this category for 2020 was Reggae’s music newcomer and star, Koffee who made history as the first female and youngest artist to win the award for her album ‘Rapture’.

Moving onto the Jamaican artists and producers who have been nominated for the ‘Album of the Year’ category which includes Shenseea, Beam, Masego, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, and more making them the first Jamaican artiste to be nominated in this category.

Shenseea

Shenseea

These nominations have been made possible after the Recording Academy stated clearly that if an album is up for ‘Album Of The Year’, then all credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album are automatically nominated. Previously, the Grammy rule stated that all of these music professionals had to be credited with 33 percent or more of playing time (on the album), in order to be nominated.

Edited: By virtue of the new rules, Shenseea is only nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ for ‘Donda’.  Her (3) other contributions to Grammy-nominated albums in the genre categories would render her a participant, according to the Grammy guidelines (see below).

  1. Kanye West’s- ‘Donda’ for Album Of The Year
  2. She is also credited for her songwriting and vocals on ‘OK OK Pt 2′ and ‘Pure Souls’
  3. Her collaboration alongside with Jamaican-American singer Masego in the Best Progressive R&B Album with his EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay.
  4. And she is also a participant in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, for Major Lazer Music Is The Weapon (Reloaded) which features her track on ‘Tiny’ alongside Beam.

Other Jamaican artistes and producers making the cut this year include:

  1. Busy Signal on the single ‘Sun Comes Up’ alongside JoeBoy, and two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley on ‘Can’t Take It From Me’.
  2.  Beam was also featured on two more tracks, namely ‘Bam Bam’ with French Montana, and ‘Rave de Favela’ with MC Lan and Anitta. Beam also contributed to Justin Bieber’s album ‘Justice’, which received nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
  3. Buju Banton is also credited on Kanye West’s 27-track set on the love song ‘Believe What I Say’
  4. Jamaican producer IzyBeats-the beatmaker on Koffee’s international breakout hit song ‘Toast’ and co-produced ‘Silver Tongue Devil’ alongside Corbett and Chris Madine, He also contributed to a second song on the EP titled ‘Yebo/Sema’.
  5.  Masego and Jamaican producer J.L.L., whose 2014 beat was sampled on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ (CLB) album, will both share a part of the victory if the Canadian rapper wins in the Best Rap Album category.
  6. In the Best Global Music Album category, Nigerian star WizKid is among five nominees for his album ‘Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition’.  The project features contributions from Jamaican artists Damian Jr. Gong’ Marley on the song ‘Blessed’, and rising artist Projexx, on the song ‘True Love’ with Tay Iwa.

A celebratory congratulations goes out to all the Jamaican artistes who were nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy awards. The final round of voting for the 64th Annual Grammy awards will begin on December 6th, 2021, and end on January 5th, 2022.

A Taste Of Sumfest 2020 Dancehall Night

‘A Taste Of Sumfest 2020’ dancehall night saw on its virtual stage, on July 24th, performances from some well-loved names in the Dancehall genre. For approximately two hours and forty-five minutes, delivering their hits to the camera were Shenseea, Ishawna, Ding Dong and The Ravers Clavers, TeeJay, Agent Sasco, Frisco Kid, Konshens, Tanto Metro, Chaka Demus & Pliers.

The audience on Friday night was taken on a time journey with performances. Viewers were given a taste of the old school before the new acts took to the stage. Performances by Tanto Metro and Devonte (Everyone Falls In Love Sometimes), Frisco Kid (Rubbers), and Chaka Demus and Pliers (Murder She Wrote), took the hands of viewers as they went back in time; hitting watchers with chunks of nostalgia.

Turning up the heat for the new era were Ding Dong and his Ravers Clavers who from the moment they touched the stage belted out hit after hit! While performing ‘Watch Dem’, Ding Dong even took the stick of his drummer and drummed along. Good energy all around!

Taking the stage after was Shenseea in her first performance since her mother’s sudden passing. On stage, in an orange pair of comfy looking sweatpants, a white long-sleeved crop top, butt length braids, and shoes of the Balenciaga label, Shenseea dove into her set with her recently dropped ‘Trick-a-Treat’. This was followed up with the track for the “independent ladies”, Independent Gyal. The almost 10 minutes long performance ended with the Tyga collaborated hit Blessed, though before diving into this banger she said, “Yuh see sometimes inna life, we take a lot of things for granted, and life is one of them. To just get up and can breathe, fi have life, is such a blessing”.

TeeJay, also on Romeich Entertainment’s label, performed after Shenseea and did a splendid performance on stage with ‘Uptop Boss’, ‘My Type’, ‘Brand New’, ‘Owna Lane’, ‘Gangster Prayer’, ‘Nah Worry Bout’, and ‘Alright’.

Ishawna, known for her controversial songs delivered a 10-minute set wearing a black bodysuit which allowed her back and stomach to be exposed. With a pair of matching sequined shorts and a long, pink wig which rest comfortably against a jacket, and fitted with boots, she delivered her hits. Included in her repertoire was the controversial ‘Equal Rights And Justice’ for which she has received a heavy backlash in the past.

Despite the Coronavirus seemingly making its home among us, the management of Reggae Sumfest has done exceedingly well under these trying conditions to make this year show a reality via virtual reality.

Shenseea At Seventh Heaven, Barbados

Shenseea, ‘the Princess of Dancehall’, recently touched down in Barbados. She sent her ShenYeng fan-base wild with her performance at Limerz Cruise’s event Seventh Heaven. It was hosted on the lush grounds of Bellevue Plantation. It seemed patrons’ sole interest was seeing the Jamaican artiste hit the stage. Nothing seemed to excite them until after an extended wait she finally emerged.

From the moment she hit the stage the venue was filled with ecstatic screams. The artiste’s engaging style of performance kept attendees tuned in as they heeded her every command. Shenseea showed why she has been creating a stir both regionally and internationally. She thrilled patrons with favourites like Tie Me Up, Trending Gyal and Foreplay. It was even more hyped when she launched in to the extremely popular Blessed.

Some party-goers got some one-on-one time with the rising star when she welcomed them to the stage to show off their dancing skills. One fan, who was clearly enamoured with the artiste, even used the opportunity to snap several selfies with the performer.
