Ky-Mani Marley Says Playing Bob Marley In Upcoming Biopic Is His Dream

Ky-Mani Marley reveals that his dream role will be playing his father, Reggae music’s legend, Bob Marley in the upcoming Paramount pictures biopic. Ky-Mani who is Bob Marley’s only son with Anita Belnavis, a Jamaican table tennis champion, is a Jamaican Grammy-nominated singer and actor well known for his roles in films such as ‘Shottas’, ‘One Love’, ‘King of the Dancehall’ and many more.

Speaking recently with the Jamaica Observer, the Rule My Heart singer shared the following sentiments:

“Absolutely! A di dream role dat! It would be a joy an’ a pleasure. Di authenticity, di whole energy, di vibe, everything. Who better to play him than me?” he added.

The official casting call for the biopic which is currently in development was released in June 2021 and read the following:

“Male, 30’s, Black/Mixed Race- A pioneer of reggae music and a Jamaican icon, we follow the Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician’s life and career. He was a man full of fight, soul, and pride. He infused his music with a sense of spirituality and political activism, striving to leave a global impact as well as a personal one with the people he loved.”

No actor has yet been named to play the lead role officially, so it may seem like Ky-Mani’s dream role is still very much possible.

The biopic is in the early days of development with King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green at the helm, while Bob’s widow Rita Marley, Ziggy Marley, and Cedella Marley will produce on behalf of Tuff Gong. With very little news being leaked, there are currently no details about the budget, release date, or even who the cast members being considered are. Since the release of a casting call, fans have been routing for one of Bob Marley’s sons or even a grandson to play the role of the music icon, who died in 1981 at age 36.

According to Ziggy Marley, whoever is eventually selected for the role will quickly understand how serious this production is to the Marleys.

“It’s an incredible responsibility that we take on with Reinaldo and the team at Paramount to tell the story of our father in a way that truly honours him and will also entertain, enlighten, uplift and inspire his fans and audiences around the world. It’s like opening a window that has never been open before,” he said.

In some other Ky-Mani news, the 45- year-old actor is currently in Miami filming his movie ‘Vendetta’, in which he plays the lead role, wrote, produced, and is co-directs alongside Antoine Smith.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will love to hear from you in the comments below!

Would you like to see Ky-Mani play his father in the upcoming biopic?

If not, who would you suggest to take on this giant of a role?

Music Giant Shinehead Releases First Music Video in 20 Years

Music maverick Shinehead swept music lovers away with his Reggae Soul hit “Never Had a Dream Come True” on the Peckings label in 2020. To celebrate the song’s 1st Anniversary, particularly since restrictions loosened to allow filming, the acclaimed artist will release a commemorative music video – his first one in 20 years.

While Shinehead has had an array of stellar music releases over the years, it’s been two decades since the legend has released a visual. So, as one can imagine, this is a milestone occasion for the artist and his multigenerational fanbase.

Keeping the momentum of his classic projects, “Never Had a Dream Come True” is a standout body of work Directed by Colette Dennard. With great anticipation, the video will premiere on World A Reggae (worldareggae.com), Friday, November 12, 2021, followed by a wide release to online and TV outlets.

‘Never Had a Dream Come True’ (Official Audio)

The “Never Had a Dream Come True” visual is truly a family affair, as Shinehead’s partner in life and business DJ Papalotl (Kingston 12 Hi-Fi), sister Starfire and brother-in-law Shango (both Reggae artists with a presence in Jamaica, U.S., and Japan) join him for memorable scenes. A young boy can also be spotted as the video’s sweet storyline of making dreams come true progresses.

Sunny Southern California serves as an ideal backdrop for the “Never Had a Dream Come” video. Pristine beaches and a variety of aerial views vividly capture West Coast beauty and give the video quite a “dreamscape” effect. As the video unfolds, Shinehead can be seen in solo shots and with his love enjoying life and nature.

Released during the pandemic, the illustrious cover saw the “Jamaican In New York” singer return to the commercial music space to much fanfare from listening audiences, DJs, sound systems, radio, and other media.

Shinehead

Notably, Shinehead is known for electrifying and innovative music that transcends Reggae, Dancehall, R&B and Hip Hop genres and equally high caliber visuals. Much to his credit, Shinehead’s legendary “Chain Gang” music video was the very first shown on the premiere episode of the cult classic “Yo MTV Raps” in 1988.

The new visual is not all the “Chain Gang” crooner is celebrating this year, as it’s the 30th Anniversary of the epic “Strive”. The phenomenal song, which still moves the masses, bears a timeless and powerful message. Shinehead will release a special Anniversary edition of “Strive”, which fans are going to love.

For those who may not remember, Etana’s 2014 album ‘I Rise’ made history at the time of its release because it was the first time in 17 years that a Jamaica Female Reggae Artist topped the Billboard’s Reggae Albums Chart. Sharing with the Jamaica Gleaner recently, Etana had this to say:

“I used to see these plaques on TV and decorating the walls in the offices of major labels and wondered when I would ever get one of those.

Having two of my own makes me feel good about the body of work which I have done so far. Coming from where my journey started in August Town and looking back, and realizing that your hard work has paid off, it kinda hits different.”

Bob Marley’s Grandson, Jo Mersa Marley, Tells T&T To Stay Strong!

The grandson of the late Jamaican music icon, Robert Nesta Marley, Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley has complimented the people of Trinidad and Tobago for their patience and resilience in facing the Covid-19 pandemic. Marley shared his thoughts on our current situation during a recent interview with OvertimeTT in which he also advised Trinbagonians to use the extra time at home to reconnect with our families and loved ones. He said:

“I cannot even begin to imagine what I would do in a lockdown situation like that… My freedom is precious to me and the ability to move around and get things done is a commodity I would not want to have removed or compromised in any way. So to the Trini people, I say big respect for holding it down so far and I would advise you to use this time to become closer with loved ones and the Most High as well. Read your Bible or whatever book from whichever religion you may be, read up and try to get closer to your higher power.” He declared. “Within these times and especially in Trinidad right now, those are some of the only things that will keep you all sane, yuh know what ah mean? Music as well can help. If you need to have a movie night – do that, but do the things that will keep you safe and sane and keep your mentality and your faith strong…”

Marley just released a 7-track EP entitled Eternal on Friday which features collaborations with Kabaka Pyramid, Black Am I, Melii and Busy Signal.

The Miami-based recording and performing artiste last visited Trinidad in 2016 when he performed at a “Dub-Wise” event held in Woodbrook, Port of Spain. Ever conscious of the connections between Jamaica and Trinidad, Marley lent some advice to the people of T&T – even as he expressed his great desire for everything to “return to normal” and to visit our shores again soon:

“Ah want to tell the Trini people to make sure and tell your family and your loved ones how much you care for and love them every day in this time. That is most important! Other than that, all I can say is keep strong – the people of Trinidad have always been strong people – and I always hear stories wey say that my grandfather considered Trinidad to be his second home before Miami… So I have nuff love for Trinidad, nuff respect and just know that through all the struggles, the Marleys we are with you in spirit.”

The son of Grammy Award Winner, Stephen Marley, Joseph spent his early years in Jamaica, where he attended Saints Peter and Paul Preparatory School before moving to Florida to attend Palmetto High School and Miami Dade College, where he studied studio engineering. Now a father to his five-year-old daughter, Sunshine, Marley was working on his first major solo album release before the pandemic hit and he chose to first share the Eternal EP with his fans now. Reggae Pioneer Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert Has Died

Reggae pioneer Frederick “Toots” Hibbert has died at the age of 77 after being in a medically induced coma. The founding singer of Toots and the Maytals, who passed away at the UWI hospital had recently been diagnosed with Covid-19. Hibbert “passed away peacefully” surrounded by his family on Friday, 11th September 2020.

Toots is credited for helping to popularize reggae music and even for giving the genre its name.  His 1968 single ‘Do the Reggay’ was the first time the term reggae was used in a song. Toots and the Maytals are best known for the hits ‘Bam Bam’, ‘Pressure Drop’, ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘54-46’ (That’s My Number). ‘Pressure Drop’ was featured on the soundtrack of the film ‘The Harder They Come’ – which introduced many US fans to reggae – and it was later introduced to the UK when the Clash covered the track.

In a statement, his family said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel ‘Toots’ Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight [Friday], surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.” His death came after Tuesday, former Culture Minister Olivia Grange appealed for blood for the Jamaica icon. The cause of death is still unknown.

Toots is a three-time winner of the Jamaica Festival Song competition and was one of the 10 finalists for 2020. His death comes just weeks before the release of the band’s first full-length album ‘Got to Be Tough’; the first in more than a decade. The band has been touring since the early 1970s, when his landmark album Funky Kingston made him a global superstar, opening for groups such as The Who and the Eagles.
