Grammy-Winning Morgan Heritage Releases New Single Featuring Rytikal, Jahsii, & I-Octane

Known for speaking on the injustice of the voiceless, with a catalog of reggae hits, the multi-Grammy award winning Trinity, Morgan Heritage has returned after two years to share their observation about the lack of attention media sheds on injustices.

Released, Friday, February 11th, 2022, “Headline Fi Front Page” features some of Dancehall’s top young guns like Rytikal (aka Purytikal), Jahshii and more seasoned artist I Octane. This stunning new single is a groovy mix between the rootsy reggae, which Morgan Heritage is known for and some vibrant contemporary dancehall, hip hop style fused.

Morgan Heritage is known for their award-winning music, and massive singles like ‘Don’t Haffi Dread’, ‘Down By The River’, ‘Tell Me How Come’ and ‘Sunday Morning’. Stellar albums like Grammy nominated Avrakadebra, Strictly Roots, which won the Grammys for best Reggae album in 2016 and most recently released Legacy, have helped to cement their space in Jamaican music history. Originally made up by five of Denroy Morgan’s very talented children, Morgan Heritage the band is now comprised of Roy “Gramps” Morgan, Peter “Peetah” Morgan and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan who are considered The Trinity. The musical fabric of the group remains intact, and their latest single is proof.

“Headline Fi Front Page ” invites young artist Rytikal, who recently underwent a transition of his own, with a more positive moniker Purytikal to give his take on the impact and responsibility media has on the information shared . He manages a skilled report on the social atmosphere, following in the footsteps of Morgan Heritage’s signature tone of keen social commentary. I-Octane, as the more experienced of the younger acts featured, brings his distinctive brand of disapproval for the flawed society that continues to fail the youth. Jahshii, gives his perspective on the misdirection news entities perpetrate with a passionate verse of his own.

Morgan Heritage provides a much-needed space to reflect on the state of our society, but also the state of the media that is charged with reporting on these conditions. They bring up several issues that have been the subject of debate in Jamaica over the last year or two, including the unfortunate shaving of a young Rastafarian by the police. Produced by Morgan Heritage themselves, this record will officially be released by one of the group’s imprints, Heritage Grown Productions and distributed by Johnny Wonder in North America and South America and by Horus Music globally.

‘Top Prize’ debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Album charts, No. 1 on the US Current Reggae album chart, and was 56th on the US Top Current Album Sales chart following Alkaline’s debut album, ‘New Level Unlocked’ which also debuted at No. 1 debut on the Billboard Reggae chart in 2016 achieving a milestone that no other Dancehall artist has managed to achieve since Shaggy in 2000.

Back in July 2021, one of the album’s producers, Maurice Linton of Armz House Records also received his very own plaque for the ‘Top Prize’.

Also in November 2021, fans of the Champion Boy caused a bit of controversy after the list of nominees for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards were announced and his name was absent from the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category.  Critics, however, argued that the Recording Academy members are required to vote solely based upon quality, without consideration for sales and chart performance.

Jamaican Artistes Sevana and Jah Cure On The Wrong Side Of The Law

Sevana and Jah Cure have unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of the law both at home and abroad. Songstress, Sevana, faces a ‘death by wrongful driving’ charge; and Call On Me crooner, Jah Cure, is staring at almost four charges: attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault, and the possibility of attempted aggravated assault.

Sevana, the artiste whose voice powers singles such as Mango, Nobody Man and Bit Too Shy, while driving in Westmoreland, Jamaica, last May, lost control of her car and ran into another. The driver of the other car, Orda Cordiel, was commuted to the hospital where she, soon after on May 30th, passed away. On June 1st, Sevana whose real name is Anna Blake, was charged.

On January 4th, Judge Steve Walters announced that the trial is set for October 31st, and with no conditions, she’s been slapped with $400, 000 bail. At the upcoming October hearing to be held at the Westmoreland Circuit Court, Sevana will have to answer to the charge laid against her for death by dangerous driving. Her legal representation, Attorney-at-law, Yushaine Morgan, in the meantime, made a request that she be allowed to travel as she is a performing artiste. In this way, the In.Digg.Nation artiste will be able to travel for shows to support her career, he successfully argued.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, Siccaturie Alcock familiarly known as Jah Cure is being charged for attempted murder involving concert promoter, Nicardo Blake, also known as Papa. Since the October 1st incident, he’s been held in a detention center outside of Amsterdam.

The Longing For artiste who would have spent 103 days behind Dutch bars on January 12th, has a pro forma hearing to determine whether his incarceration will be extended or dropped.

“At the pro forma hearing, the prosecutor will reveal the current status of the investigation and whether the prosecutor considers it necessary for the suspect to remain in custody for a period of up to 90 days. It will then be up to the court to decide whether the remand order will be extended or not,” explained Franklin Wattimena, the press officer with The Netherlands Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam.

“The pre-trial arrest can also be cancelled by court, whereupon the suspect will be released. It can also be ‘suspended’, whereupon the suspect will be released subject to certain conditions.” Wattimena also explained.

The fate of these two musicians hang in the air, of course, stay tuned to this space for more developments!

Both finalists displayed true professionalism, lyrical genius, and excellent performances to bring the first season to a close. Regional Marketing Manager for Magnum, Kamal Powell said the Magnum Top Performa series far exceeded everyone’s expectations:

“We knew what we wanted to achieve with this competition – we wanted to unearth and hone talent and introduce them to the music and entertainment, but we never anticipated the impact it would have on the contestants or the support the brand would get. The debut of this competition has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Powell.

King Calie was at a loss for words:

“The competition was great! All the contestants did really well and I am just so happy to have come out on top. I am so overwhelmed and just grateful to Magnum Tonic Wine and Romeich for this opportunity. It was a lot of work, but it paid off in the end,” he said.

King Calie walks away with a million dollars and will have the opportunity to create a music video and a song, to be produced by Romeich Entertainment. Second place winner, Price Saj, will receive $300,000 and a feature on a compilation rhythm from Romeich Entertainment, while the other runners-up will receive $100,000 each.

Prince Saj & King Calie

Just as the top contestants leave with well-deserved prizes, so does Davandrey Whyte, the lucky winner of the prediction game. He will receive $50,000 for using the MagnumHub.tv platform to correctly guess who would reign supreme during the competition.

Music producer and artiste manager as well as partner in Magnum Top Performa, Romeich Major had nothing but well wishes for the winner, and fellow participants.

“Congratulations to King Calie our overall winner. Also hats off to all the contestants, you all showed true professionalism, creativity and lyrical skills, keep going, every one of you has what it takes to make it,” he said.

Magnum Top Performa is a lyrical face-off competition where initially 16 artistes clashed against each other every Thursday over fifteen (15) weeks, freestyling to ’16 bars’ on rhythms played by a host DJ.

The show had three rounds: the preliminaries, semi-finals and the finals – where the Top Performa was crowned. Viewers can catch rebroadcasts exclusively on the brand’s website at magnumhub.tv.

Bob Marley & Usain Bolt To Be Named Jamaica’s National Heroes?

Reggae icon Bob Marley, Eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, Reggae music legend Jimmy Cliff and Celebrated poet & writer Miss Lou could be honored as Jamaica’s next national heroes.

In the latest motion brought by the Opposition government senator, Floyd Morris in the Houses of Parliament in Jamaica, if all goes well with the planned motion the national heroes will be named at the upcoming 60th Independence Jamaica celebrations. This proposal comes off the heels of the recent appointment of Bajan Superstar and Billionaire, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty who received the Order of National Hero by Barbados at the ceremony where Barbados was declared a Republic as it removed itself from under the British Monarchy on 30th November 2021.

In an effort to do the same, after many criticized the Jamaican government for not recognizing their own heroes, the following names were listed as Jamaicans who should be recognized for their historic contributions to music, the arts, and language in the island.

Jimmy Cliff, Miss Lou

Jimmy Cliff & Miss Lou

During a sitting of Senators on Friday 10th December, Morris had this to say:

“Whereas the Honourable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley”; the Honourable James Chambers, Jimmy Cliff; the Honourable Louise Bennett-Coverley, Miss Lou; and the Honourable Usain St Leo Bolt have all given most distinguished service to Jamaica in the areas of music, sports, and culture; and whereas these citizens have presented Jamaica in a fabulous light across the world and contributed to the dominance of the country in reggae music, sports and culture since the country gained political independence in 1962; and whereas their prodigious efforts through their career have contributed to the global recognition of Jamaica, be it resolved that this honourable senate calls upon the government to put in place the necessary mechanisms and procedures for these iconic Jamaicans to be declared national heroes and heroines, respectively, and be it resolved that these conferments be made in time for the 60th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence on August 6, 2022”

In some related news, fun fact- Did you know that Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Miss Lou have all been honored with the ‘Order of Merit’ by the Jamaican Government for their incomparable contribution to Jamaican culture? Usain Bolt, however, was honored with the ‘Order of Jamaica’ for his contributions to the world of athletics and is still, to date considered to be the greatest sprinter of all time.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to hear your thoughts on this?

Do you agree with these Jamaican icons being named National Heroes?

Shenseea, Rvssian – You’re The One I Love

Well, guys, we know what Shenseea meant by Y.A.T.O.I.L.  At 12AM on December 10th, You’re The One I Love was released, and let me just tell ya, it’s groovy, rhythm changing and an altogether different sound from Chinsea Lee. Think of it as a cross between R&B, Afrobeat and Shenseea. It provides you a front-row seat where you can listen to her profess her love on a beat that has a Caribbean-type vibe to it.  To her love interest, Shenseea says “My heart is always on your side, our connection is rare to find.” this she says is the reason “why, mi nuh gon’ let you go”.

Produced by Rvssian, You’re The One I Love was released under Interscope Records and Rvssian’s label, Rich Immigrants.  In a partnership with Interscope, about Rich Immigrants, Tarik “Rvssian” Johnston said, “I feel like the name is super powerful, because I’m an immigrant, and a lot of the people that are successful in the world are immigrants”, this he said on April 20th last year, in 2020. Though the magic that they create is somewhat like a habit, collaborations you can catch those two on include: Blessed (Shenseea, Tyga, Rvssian), IDkw (Shenseea, Young Thug, Swae Lee, Rvssian), Hard Drive (Shenseea, Konshens, Rvssian), Lighter (Shenseea, Tarrus Riley, Rvssian), Sure Sure and recently, Be Good.

Shenseea, in making both a Vybz Kartel and Harry Potter reference right after the other said: “Mi love yuh like Shorty love Addi, you put ah spell pon’ mi, ya mussi Harry”. Though at the same time, she let her love interest know that even though “Mi feelings dem high, nuh need to hide dem”, and they’re to know that, “ain’t no Bonnie and Clyde, this ah Chucky and the bride.” Catch Shenseea in the stunning visuals below!

Spice, Shenseea & Sean Paul Amongst Jamaicans Nominated For 2022 Grammy Awards

Spice, Shenseea, and Sean Paul are amongst the list of Jamaicans nominated at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Yes, with the recent announcement of the official 64th Annual Grammy Awards nominees, Jamaicans and by extension the Caribbean, have been celebrating as some of Reggae’s and Dancehall’s music top stars have been nominated. And just in case you missed it, Caribbean Entertainment Hub is here to give you the full breakdown of our Jamaican nominees along with their respective categories.

Kicking it off in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category, this year’s list included the Queen of Dancehall, Spice with her debut album titled ‘TEN’ which was released in August 2021. This is also a history-making moment because it is the first time that a hardcore Female Dancehall artist has been nominated for the Grammy awards.

Spice

Spice

Also nominated in this category is Reggae artiste Etana with her second Grammy nomination for her album ‘Pamoja’. This is, however, not Etana’s first time being nominated for a Grammy, as she also created some history in 2018 being the first woman to get a nomination in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category in more than two decades. At that time she was also the fourth woman to ever get nominated for this Grammy award.

Also, landing his first-ever Grammy nomination is Jesse Royal for his album ‘Royal’, which was released in June 2021. And Sean Paul received his sixth Grammy nomination for his album ‘Live N Livin’. Sean Paul is also a previous Grammy Award winner for his album ‘Dutty Rock’ in 2004. And lastly, Gramps Morgan was nominated for his album ‘Positive Vibration’ which was released in July 2021. Gramps, a previous nominee and winner with his group Morgan Heritage who previously won the award in 2015 for their album ‘Strictly Roots’.

Fun Fact: The winner in this category for 2020 was Reggae’s music newcomer and star, Koffee who made history as the first female and youngest artist to win the award for her album ‘Rapture’.

Moving onto the Jamaican artists and producers who have been nominated for the ‘Album of the Year’ category which includes Shenseea, Beam, Masego, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, and more making them the first Jamaican artiste to be nominated in this category.

Shenseea

Shenseea

These nominations have been made possible after the Recording Academy stated clearly that if an album is up for ‘Album Of The Year’, then all credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album are automatically nominated. Previously, the Grammy rule stated that all of these music professionals had to be credited with 33 percent or more of playing time (on the album), in order to be nominated.

Edited: By virtue of the new rules, Shenseea is only nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ for ‘Donda’.  Her (3) other contributions to Grammy-nominated albums in the genre categories would render her a participant, according to the Grammy guidelines (see below).

  1. Kanye West’s- ‘Donda’ for Album Of The Year
  2. She is also credited for her songwriting and vocals on ‘OK OK Pt 2′ and ‘Pure Souls’
  3. Her collaboration alongside with Jamaican-American singer Masego in the Best Progressive R&B Album with his EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay.
  4. And she is also a participant in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, for Major Lazer Music Is The Weapon (Reloaded) which features her track on ‘Tiny’ alongside Beam.

Other Jamaican artistes and producers making the cut this year include:

  1. Busy Signal on the single ‘Sun Comes Up’ alongside JoeBoy, and two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley on ‘Can’t Take It From Me’.
  2.  Beam was also featured on two more tracks, namely ‘Bam Bam’ with French Montana, and ‘Rave de Favela’ with MC Lan and Anitta. Beam also contributed to Justin Bieber’s album ‘Justice’, which received nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
  3. Buju Banton is also credited on Kanye West’s 27-track set on the love song ‘Believe What I Say’
  4. Jamaican producer IzyBeats-the beatmaker on Koffee’s international breakout hit song ‘Toast’ and co-produced ‘Silver Tongue Devil’ alongside Corbett and Chris Madine, He also contributed to a second song on the EP titled ‘Yebo/Sema’.
  5.  Masego and Jamaican producer J.L.L., whose 2014 beat was sampled on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ (CLB) album, will both share a part of the victory if the Canadian rapper wins in the Best Rap Album category.
  6. In the Best Global Music Album category, Nigerian star WizKid is among five nominees for his album ‘Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition’.  The project features contributions from Jamaican artists Damian Jr. Gong’ Marley on the song ‘Blessed’, and rising artist Projexx, on the song ‘True Love’ with Tay Iwa.

A celebratory congratulations goes out to all the Jamaican artistes who were nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy awards. The final round of voting for the 64th Annual Grammy awards will begin on December 6th, 2021, and end on January 5th, 2022.

Ky-Mani Marley Says Playing Bob Marley In Upcoming Biopic Is His Dream

Ky-Mani Marley reveals that his dream role will be playing his father, Reggae music’s legend, Bob Marley in the upcoming Paramount pictures biopic. Ky-Mani who is Bob Marley’s only son with Anita Belnavis, a Jamaican table tennis champion, is a Jamaican Grammy-nominated singer and actor well known for his roles in films such as ‘Shottas’, ‘One Love’, ‘King of the Dancehall’ and many more.

Speaking recently with the Jamaica Observer, the Rule My Heart singer shared the following sentiments:

“Absolutely! A di dream role dat! It would be a joy an’ a pleasure. Di authenticity, di whole energy, di vibe, everything. Who better to play him than me?” he added.

The official casting call for the biopic which is currently in development was released in June 2021 and read the following:

“Male, 30’s, Black/Mixed Race- A pioneer of reggae music and a Jamaican icon, we follow the Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician’s life and career. He was a man full of fight, soul, and pride. He infused his music with a sense of spirituality and political activism, striving to leave a global impact as well as a personal one with the people he loved.”

No actor has yet been named to play the lead role officially, so it may seem like Ky-Mani’s dream role is still very much possible.

The biopic is in the early days of development with King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green at the helm, while Bob’s widow Rita Marley, Ziggy Marley, and Cedella Marley will produce on behalf of Tuff Gong. With very little news being leaked, there are currently no details about the budget, release date, or even who the cast members being considered are. Since the release of a casting call, fans have been routing for one of Bob Marley’s sons or even a grandson to play the role of the music icon, who died in 1981 at age 36.

According to Ziggy Marley, whoever is eventually selected for the role will quickly understand how serious this production is to the Marleys.

“It’s an incredible responsibility that we take on with Reinaldo and the team at Paramount to tell the story of our father in a way that truly honours him and will also entertain, enlighten, uplift and inspire his fans and audiences around the world. It’s like opening a window that has never been open before,” he said.

In some other Ky-Mani news, the 45- year-old actor is currently in Miami filming his movie ‘Vendetta’, in which he plays the lead role, wrote, produced, and is co-directs alongside Antoine Smith.

Ky Mani on set 'Vendetta' movie alongside Majah Hype & Crime Minister

The movie began production in South Florida earlier this year with an estimated budget of $1.5 million. Production is expected to wrap by November 22, 2021, however, no official release date has been announced but Ky-Mani hopes to release the project in Spring 2022.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will love to hear from you in the comments below!

Would you like to see Ky-Mani play his father in the upcoming biopic?

If not, who would you suggest to take on this giant of a role?
