Guyanese Top Producer Joel Browne Releases New ‘Small Days Riddim’

Guyanese Top Producer Joel Browne releases brand new ‘Small Days Riddim’.

Joel Browne is a former military officer and commercial pilot who launched his production company in 2016. Since then, some of his credits includes some of the Caribbean Top Artistes such as Dexta Daps, Beenie Man, Tarrus Riley, and Spice, just to name a few.

From a tender age of (9) years old, Joel was always in love with music after getting a mini piano as a present from his father. As a member and keyboardist of his Dad’s church he was able to hone his musical gift. Joel at a young age wanted to be a Doctor but found his real love was music and aviation, so after graduation high school he perused both careers. During his time in flight school he would play at church part time in the Metro Atlanta area while flying and still finding time for music. It was during his time in Atlanta that he learned the Southern Hip- Hop sound of the early 2000’s that helped to shape his musical ear as well as the Baptist music he would hear at his Sunday gigs. With the ability to learn quickly Joel was able to fuse the music he learnt from his home country Guyana and fuse it with those sounds he was exposed to in Atlanta Georgia.

Today, Joel is happily married to his wife Dr. Judy Browne and they have two beautiful children together. They also own a family clinic and run a few other businesses together. Driven by a desire to bring great music to his country and to support his father in business he resigned from the military as a pilot and pursued his music career. He is responsible for working on many projects for the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, and the Ministry of Education in Guyana.

With a mission and movement to put Guyana on the map musically, Joel has been expanding his catalog and production brand recently launching his new riddim, titled the ‘Small Days’ Riddim’. The radio friendly riddim was produced at the Joey2kool Productions Studios in Georgetown. With this riddim, Joel was influenced by his childhood music and he wanted to take things back to his roots in 2022.

The riddim features some of Guyana’s Top performers such as:

CEH Fashion Spotlights Kerby Young’s ‘Island Boy’ Clothing Capsule

Introducing Kerby Young’s latest capsule collection called ‘Island Boy’ which has the Caribbean buzzing and curious to learn more about this serial entrepreneur, and the rise of his start-up Caribbean-inspired clothing business and ever-evolving Fashion empire right here in the Caribbean.

Kerby Young is a 36-year-old, Guyanese-born, Trinidad-based Creative Director and Fashion Designer of Kerby Young Designs (KYD). As a self-taught fashion designer with a career in fashion designing for over 16 years, Caribbean Entertainment Hub was intrigued to learn what exactly ignited his passion for fashion?

Well, according to Mr. Young, it all first began when he designed an elegant evening gown for a Miss-talented Teen pageant. Since then, his Fashion empire has now evolved into him designing unisex clothing, bags, accessories, and masks, all of which are inspired by the Caribbean aesthetic. He believes that the Caribbean aesthetic manages to balance the beauty of clothing and the sustainability of life and that is mainly why he decided to center his company’s brand around the Caribbean.

Throughout the years, he was able to gain popularity in countries such as Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and some parts of the USA and Canada. Despite the challenges that covid restrictions posed, he was able to release his brand-new collection which targets the men of KYD.

So who exactly is an ‘Island Boy’ and what exactly was the inspiration behind it?

According to Mr. Young, he believes that being “an island boy” means, to be someone who truly appreciates and revels in the Caribbean’s flora and fauna and all that it brings. His inspiration for this collection was derived from the newly popular term ‘hot boy summer’. Every piece from this capsule aims to radiate the same vibrant energy and beauty of the Caribbean through the fabrics and colors chosen. When constructing these designs, his main mission was to ensure that anyone who wears any of these pieces feels empowered, motivated, driven…essentially the best version of themselves.

Not allowing the covid-19 pandemic to constrict his creativity, he decided to release his new clothing capsule ‘Island Boy’. The inspiration behind the collection was actually inspired by the social media video platform TikTok. Sharing that he often heard people constantly talking about ‘hot girl summer’.

‘What happen to ‘hot boy summer’? I realized that was not a thing. So I thought, let me see if I could do something for the guys.’

Young said most of his designs are for the ladies, and they were more into fashion. So he titled his collection for the guys ‘Island Boy’. The collection color palette consists of sea blues, green, red, and yellow, with each piece given a Caribbean-themed name such as ‘Caribbean Sea’and ‘Caribbean Breeze’ just to name a few. You can enjoy some of the designs from his ‘Island Boy’ capsule collection below.

So far the response from his collection has been positive. With one of his shirts designs being featured on Soca artiste Turner’s new music video ‘Summertime’. Young even added that he will be adding hoodies and track pants as well as more ‘Island Boy’ merchandise soon as well as a new collection on the way with the ladies in mind that he hopes to release for the Christmas season.

Guyanese Film ‘Whatever It Takes’ Coming Soon

Get your Popcorn and coke ready because the official trailer for the Guyanese Film ‘Whatever It Takes’ was released amidst a massive social media frenzy. The trailer has many excited patrons on the “edge of their seats” awaiting the official release of the full-length film. The action-packed drama film explores major social issues such as abuse, gun and gang violence, and drug trafficking. Between the all-star cast, fast-flowing action sequence, and cultural asterisks that dominate the authentically Guyanese scenery depicted in the trailer, the movie is an undeniable, must-see.

Perplexed by the lack of Guyanese films in POP culture, Film writer Laured Stewart decided to “be the change he wanted to see”. The Talented Film writer told Caribbean Entertainment Hub that he wrote the film in 2019 with the intention of speaking to the subconscious minds of the audience by addressing pressing social issues in a real and relatable manner. He further explained that he would often encourage on-set improvising since it allowed for more authentic storytelling.

Finance, personality and creative clashes, appropriation of locations and equipment were some minor hurdles that threatened the project. According to Stewart, he was, however, able to master what was the biggest challenge of all by finding a team that saw and supported his vision.

Stewart

Laured Stewart

In an unorthodox procedure as relates to modern-day film making, Stewart explained that the directing and production of ‘Whatever It Takes’ was a collaborative effort involving the entire team. The project was independently funded by the film’s writer and his team and it is therefore critical to monetizing the project.

Even as final edits and discussions pertaining to rollout and promotional plans for the film ensue, there are already talks about a sequel. Stewart says that his aim is to impress the public so much so with this pilot project that sponsors will jump at the opportunity to come on board the next project, alleviating the financial strain on his team.

The fandom continues to grow as many await what promises to be an unforgettable theatrical journey that promises to take its audience on an emotional roller coaster emitting a feeling of national pride within Guyanese patriots.

We here at Caribbean Entertainment Hub share in the enthusiasm. We wish to congratulate the film’s writer and his team and promise to keep you our faithful readers fully informed as regards its launching and promotional schedule.

The Future Of Soca & Calypso In Guyana Is In Good Hands

This weekend saw the virtual airing of the junior and senior monarchs and it was quite the spectacle as the newcomers painted an undeniably brilliant future of the local music industry.  While much of the fanfare surrounded the senior categories, the junior categories also came through with some major excitement. While the seniors had what is being dubbed one of the most epic battles to ever be witnessed in monarch history, the juniors showed that they are ready to take it to the next level as well.

First-time contestant OKC took home the crown in both the junior calypso and soca monarch and understandably took the prize for the best newcomer as well. OKC in a pre-competition interview with Caribbean Entertainment Hub expressed varying levels of confidence at winning both competitions and pledged to give it his all in a bid to cop the coveted crown. His Soca entitled ‘Brawling’ factors the Coronavirus pandemic and how the lockdown has left a thirst within the populous for entertainment and the “just got out of jail feeling” that it emits when outside reopens.  His calypso is entitled ‘Polos and Ts’ the song brings a modern perspective to the social commentary geared genre usually dominated by political satire.

When asked about the inspiration for this OKC stated that he wants to revive the calypso art form. He sighted that calypso is losing favor with younger audiences but hopes that with more modern and relatable topics he can attract millennials to the genre and preserve its future.

Runners up to OKC included young Akeem Alexander who took third in both competitions this would be Akeem Alexanderthe 21-year-old’s last time competing as a junior and he wanted to leave his mark on the competition. In a pre-competition interview with the Hub, the confident young artiste expressed feelings of exhaustion from what he described as his hardest training regiment. His calypso features themes of child abuse from the perspective of a child, while his Soca like many others refers to the ongoing global pandemic with a reflective look at life before the pandemic.  Young Alexander sounded an official warning to the titans of the senior class since he will be contesting as a senior from next year. He stated that he is looking forward to competing with many of the artistes that inspired him and shaped him into the artiste he is today.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub wish to congratulate all the young talent that continues to show that Guyana’s entertainment is in good hands. The future of soca and calypso in the ‘land of many waters’ looks bright. We look forward to keeping you our faithful readers frequently updated as the Guyana story unfolds.

Guyanese American Rapper SAINt JHN Wins Two Grammy Awards

Guyanese-born, American Rapper SAINt JHN can now add Grammy Award winner to his list of accomplishments.

Yes, SAINt JHN, whose real name is Carlos St. John Phillips, earned two Grammy’s at the 63rd Grammy Awards that was held virtually on Sunday 14th March 2021.

Announcing the news on Twitter, SAINt JHN wrote:

“Two songs I wrote won Grammys today in real life. Imagine not believing in me a year ago.”

And by the two songs he wrote, he is referring to his collaboration with Beyoncé, Wizkid, and Blue Ivy Carter on ‘Brown Skin Girl’ from The Lion King: The Gift, which won ‘Best Music Video’; and also Kazakhstani musician Imanbek who won the ‘Best Remixed Recording’ Grammy for ‘Roses – Imanbek Remix’, a remix of SAINT JHN’s 2016 song ‘Roses’.

However, although SAINt JHN is featured on the single ‘Brown Skin Girl’ and shares the writer’s credit, he was not officially recognized as an awardee in the category, because he did not appear in the music video which typically acknowledges the performers, directors, and producers associated with the winning video. The collaboration has also earned the rapper numerous milestones, awards and nominations at many major and international awards shows. For example, in his first official debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at position 76, the song also won (2) Soul Train Music Awards, a BET Awards, and an NAACP Image Awards.

Additionally, his ‘Roses’ single continues to enjoy longevity, as it has been certified platinum three times with over a billion streams on Spotify. The remix is 1x platinum and has an impressive 147 million views on YouTube. And it seems like he is just getting started as he just released his third studio album ‘While the World Was Burning’ in November 2020.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to congratulate our Guyanese brother on his Grammy wins and we look forward to him achieving many more awards and accolades in the future.

New Music From The Land Of Many Waters

If variety be the spice of life, then from all indications Guyanese can look forward to a spicy 2021 via the music and arts industry. At only two months in, fans have already been treated to several internationally acclaimed mega hits from local musicians. As is customary for this period many new soca and chutney releases have already begun to dominate the radio, but it’s not all soca and chutney. As Guyana is characterized by its cultural diversity, the music for 2021, so far, features many different genres. In this review, we include new releases in Soca, Chutney, Dancehall, R&B, Pop, and even Gospel.

Note mentioning is Kady Kish with her patriotic Soca ‘Is We Own’ in which she sings “The Guyanese are chanting together, not one blade of grass. Tell them if they cross the border, not one blade of grass”.

In the Chutney realm, Steven Ramphal whose music is characterized by emotional depth and imagery has given us two vintage Ramphal’s songs. The first a love song to his wife ‘Never Leave You’ and the second ‘Love Is The Trend’, a plea for the unification of Guyana’s ethnically charged society.

In dancehall, the Drew Thoven and Timeka Marshal collab that is making a major impact on the music scene with a Hit entitled ‘Ahead Of Us’ the two artistes blended their voices to dispel tales featuring pop culture relevant themes such as friends with benefits, casual sex, and even fellatio.

In Hip hop and R&B, the least lucrative music markets in Guyana, Thoni has remained true to the craft and continues to produce brilliant R&B with ‘Luv’ and ‘Brand New’ where he added a little dancehall flavour in a bid to better reach the Guyanese audience.

Guyanese beauty queen and singer, Poonam Singh showed her brilliance with a pop-sounding ‘Happy Place’ the song was an overnight success and remains one of the most acclaimed songs coming from Guyana’s music industry.

As we approach the Easter celebration and season of lent a period a grave significant to the Christian Community, it is only fitting that we end this review in the religious genre. It was by pure coincidence that the gospel treasure created by a team of pass calypso and soca entertainers was discovered. ‘Safe On The Inside’ by Michelle Sylvester & Denyse Plummer tells the story of past secular entertainers choosing to give up the lights for a life of servitude based on what they describe as divine encounters. The relatable themes aside, the song features catchy rhythm and flow that made it an instant hit.

Caribbean Entertainment Hub wishes to congratulate all the hard-working local entertainers and promise to keep our readers informed as regards the developments in Guyana’s growing arts arena.
