A Night to Remember: David Rudder & Kes The Band ‘Live for Us’ Concert Experience

This will definitely be a night to remember, as Calypso’s music icon David Michael Rudder and Soca music’s superstars, Kes The Band, serenaded  hundreds of Mothers at the ‘LIVE for US’ concert experience on Saturday 7th May, 2022 at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad.

The concert experience which was hosted by Nu-Wave Event Solutions Ltd, was also deemed the perfect Mother’s Day Experience for it took place on Mother’s Day weekend. Hosted by popular Media Personality, the Palance master himself, Jason ‘JW’ Williams, the guests were all dressed to impress to celebrate a night of music’s royalty.

Warming up the stage with an amazing opening performance to set the tone for the night was vocalist Jason ‘Fridge’ Seecharan before the legend himself, David Michael Rudder blessed the stage and fans with a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Performing many of his timeless classics, David opened his set with his hit ‘Calypso Music’ sending patrons into a singing frenzy as they sang along to many of his ‘new songs’ as he jokingly introduced them. Making the list included ‘High Mas’, ‘The Ganges & The Nile’, ‘A Madman Rant’, and many more including ‘Trini To De Bone’, which recently became the theme for the seventh episode of the third season of the FX Network’s mega-popular US television series Atlanta.

And the fun didn’t quite stay on the stage, as David made his way to the crowd numerous times throughout his performances and partied with patrons up close and personal, which we can assure you they most definitely enjoyed.

David also received a surprise tribute and birthday serenade as he was later called on stage after wrapping up his performance as the crowd joined in to wish him a happy 69th birthday which he celebrated the day before on Friday 7th, May 2022. The living legend and only artiste in history to take home the Young King, Calypso Monarch, and Road March titles in the same year, 1986, was also honored with a plaque from Nu-Wave Event Solutions Ltd, as a token of celebration for Rudder’s cultural contribution to the musical and artistic fabric of Trinidad and Tobago. The award was presented by the Culture and Tourism Minister himself, Randall Mitchell.

The night continued with a one-hour long intermission, where patrons were treated to finger foods,  premium drinks, and musical interludes from saxophonist Pedro Lezama and pannist Dajean Cain.

During the break, Caribbean Entertainment Hub caught up with the man of the night, Mr. Liki Tiki himself, Kes for a brief interview about what we can expect for the remainder of 2022. Some of the highlights he assured us we can look forward to including in his new album that’s on the way and his upcoming performance at the 2022 Essence Fest Main Stage.

Now, taking you all back to the stage for Kes The Band’s epic performance of the night, the soca star opened the night greeting his fans with a warm and friendly ‘Hello’. Before moving onto songs like ‘Workout, ‘Wotless’, ‘Magic’, and new releases like ‘Jolene’ and ‘Liki Tiki’. He later ended the night with an energetic bang as he performed ‘Dear Promoter’, ‘Stage Gone Bad’, ‘Savannah Grass’.
Kes gave nothing short of an amazing performance leaving the stage many times to hug and interact with his fans. He also made a patron’s night when he invited her to the stage to showcase her much obvious Trini Flag in hand as she repped for the Red, White, and Black.
Kes also surprised patrons when David Rudder took the stage with him to perform their 2013 collaboration ‘Live Yuh Life (Like Yuh Playin Mas)’. Kes also took this time to pay homage as he acknowledged Rudder as one of his childhood icons (see featured photo).

“I covered Rudder in my school days, so I will always look up to him, even as we stand on the strength of his shoulders now and going forward. God bless him with long life and good health. He is a national treasure and a living legend, an icon, and we’re honored to have reached a level where we can actually share a stage with him. It’s a very surreal feeling every time.”

All in all the night was a splendid night which showcased that the entertainment industry and events are well on to returning to their full glory. According to Nu-Wave Marketing manager, Gleeson Job this event is the first of many more to come in the ‘LIVE For US’ event series. He highlighted that the focus is to provide premium local, regional, and international entertainment in a safe environment to persons looking for a dynamic and mature new experience. Nu-Wave events director, Michael Sealy also expressed tremendous gratitude to all patrons for their support and encouragement, all of the Hyatt and support staff, sponsors, and the cast of performers, entertainers, musicians, and their support teams.

“This event is a dream come true and the result of many months of planning and timely execution by our team and all our providers,”

We at CEH will like to thank Nu-Wave Event Solutions Ltd and a special thanks to Media Liaison, Nigel Telesford and Overtime Media.

Calypso History Month 2020: Celebrating the Classics

“Can you hear a distant drum bouncing on the laughter of a melody
And does the rhythm tell you, come, come, come? Does your spirit do a dance to this symphony?”

This, the lyrics of David Rudder’s immortal ‘Calypso Music’ come to mind as we celebrate Calypso History Month.

This year celebrates 19 years since the official launch of the ‘Calypso History Month’. In 2002, Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) declared October the official ‘Calypso History Month’ to celebrate the significance of calypso music and culture in Trinidad and Tobago.

Calypso, defined as a rhythmic and harmonic style of Afro-Caribbean music, originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the mid-19th century and later made its way to the rest of the Caribbean by the mid-20th century. Though, many of its roots can be found in the traditions of West Africa. This marvellous musical art form has since evolved over the years and continues to be used to entertain while educating many with topics touching on political and social commentary, humor, nation-building, and other themes. No one has more beautifully or aptly described Calypso music as the lyrical genius, David Rudder, did in the afore-mentioned ‘Calypso Music’:

“It is a living vibration
Rooted deep within my Caribbean belly
Lyrics to make a politician grin
Or turn a woman’s body into jelly
It is a sweet soca music calypso
You could ah never refuse it calypso
It make you shake like a Shango now calypso
Why it is you shaking you don’t know
That’s calypso.”

This year like many other events, the ‘Calypso History Month’ will be experienced virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In an effort to commemorate this month, and pay homage to this art form, Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to feature some of the classics in calypso music from some of our musical masters who have helped paved the way. With icons such as the late Lord Kitchener, the Mighty Sparrow, Lord Pretender, Calypso Rose, David Rudder, Lord Nelson, and many more; let’s take a musical trip down memory lane.
