Grammy-Winning Morgan Heritage Releases New Single Featuring Rytikal, Jahsii, & I-Octane

Known for speaking on the injustice of the voiceless, with a catalog of reggae hits, the multi-Grammy award winning Trinity, Morgan Heritage has returned after two years to share their observation about the lack of attention media sheds on injustices.

Released, Friday, February 11th, 2022, “Headline Fi Front Page” features some of Dancehall’s top young guns like Rytikal (aka Purytikal), Jahshii and more seasoned artist I Octane. This stunning new single is a groovy mix between the rootsy reggae, which Morgan Heritage is known for and some vibrant contemporary dancehall, hip hop style fused.

Morgan Heritage is known for their award-winning music, and massive singles like ‘Don’t Haffi Dread’, ‘Down By The River’, ‘Tell Me How Come’ and ‘Sunday Morning’. Stellar albums like Grammy nominated Avrakadebra, Strictly Roots, which won the Grammys for best Reggae album in 2016 and most recently released Legacy, have helped to cement their space in Jamaican music history. Originally made up by five of Denroy Morgan’s very talented children, Morgan Heritage the band is now comprised of Roy “Gramps” Morgan, Peter “Peetah” Morgan and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan who are considered The Trinity. The musical fabric of the group remains intact, and their latest single is proof.

“Headline Fi Front Page ” invites young artist Rytikal, who recently underwent a transition of his own, with a more positive moniker Purytikal to give his take on the impact and responsibility media has on the information shared . He manages a skilled report on the social atmosphere, following in the footsteps of Morgan Heritage’s signature tone of keen social commentary. I-Octane, as the more experienced of the younger acts featured, brings his distinctive brand of disapproval for the flawed society that continues to fail the youth. Jahshii, gives his perspective on the misdirection news entities perpetrate with a passionate verse of his own.

Morgan Heritage provides a much-needed space to reflect on the state of our society, but also the state of the media that is charged with reporting on these conditions. They bring up several issues that have been the subject of debate in Jamaica over the last year or two, including the unfortunate shaving of a young Rastafarian by the police. Produced by Morgan Heritage themselves, this record will officially be released by one of the group’s imprints, Heritage Grown Productions and distributed by Johnny Wonder in North America and South America and by Horus Music globally.

‘Top Prize’ debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Album charts, No. 1 on the US Current Reggae album chart, and was 56th on the US Top Current Album Sales chart following Alkaline’s debut album, ‘New Level Unlocked’ which also debuted at No. 1 debut on the Billboard Reggae chart in 2016 achieving a milestone that no other Dancehall artist has managed to achieve since Shaggy in 2000.

Back in July 2021, one of the album’s producers, Maurice Linton of Armz House Records also received his very own plaque for the ‘Top Prize’.

Also in November 2021, fans of the Champion Boy caused a bit of controversy after the list of nominees for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards were announced and his name was absent from the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category.  Critics, however, argued that the Recording Academy members are required to vote solely based upon quality, without consideration for sales and chart performance.

This is also a history-making moment because it is the first time that a hardcore Female Dancehall artist has been nominated for the Grammy awards.

Spice

Spice

Also nominated in this category is Reggae artiste Etana with her second Grammy nomination for her album ‘Pamoja’. This is, however, not Etana’s first time being nominated for a Grammy, as she also created some history in 2018 being the first woman to get a nomination in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category in more than two decades. At that time she was also the fourth woman to ever get nominated for this Grammy award.

Also, landing his first-ever Grammy nomination is Jesse Royal for his album ‘Royal’, which was released in June 2021. And Sean Paul received his sixth Grammy nomination for his album ‘Live N Livin’. Sean Paul is also a previous Grammy Award winner for his album ‘Dutty Rock’ in 2004. And lastly, Gramps Morgan was nominated for his album ‘Positive Vibration’ which was released in July 2021. Gramps, a previous nominee and winner with his group Morgan Heritage who previously won the award in 2015 for their album ‘Strictly Roots’.

Fun Fact: The winner in this category for 2020 was Reggae’s music newcomer and star, Koffee who made history as the first female and youngest artist to win the award for her album ‘Rapture’.

Moving onto the Jamaican artists and producers who have been nominated for the ‘Album of the Year’ category which includes Shenseea, Beam, Masego, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, and more making them the first Jamaican artiste to be nominated in this category.

Shenseea

Shenseea

These nominations have been made possible after the Recording Academy stated clearly that if an album is up for ‘Album Of The Year’, then all credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album are automatically nominated. Previously, the Grammy rule stated that all of these music professionals had to be credited with 33 percent or more of playing time (on the album), in order to be nominated.

Edited: By virtue of the new rules, Shenseea is only nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ for ‘Donda’.  Her (3) other contributions to Grammy-nominated albums in the genre categories would render her a participant, according to the Grammy guidelines (see below).

  1. Kanye West’s- ‘Donda’ for Album Of The Year
  2. She is also credited for her songwriting and vocals on ‘OK OK Pt 2′ and ‘Pure Souls’
  3. Her collaboration alongside with Jamaican-American singer Masego in the Best Progressive R&B Album with his EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay.
  4. And she is also a participant in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, for Major Lazer Music Is The Weapon (Reloaded) which features her track on ‘Tiny’ alongside Beam.

Other Jamaican artistes and producers making the cut this year include:

  1. Busy Signal on the single ‘Sun Comes Up’ alongside JoeBoy, and two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley on ‘Can’t Take It From Me’.
  2.  Beam was also featured on two more tracks, namely ‘Bam Bam’ with French Montana, and ‘Rave de Favela’ with MC Lan and Anitta. Beam also contributed to Justin Bieber’s album ‘Justice’, which received nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
  3. Buju Banton is also credited on Kanye West’s 27-track set on the love song ‘Believe What I Say’
  4. Jamaican producer IzyBeats-the beatmaker on Koffee’s international breakout hit song ‘Toast’ and co-produced ‘Silver Tongue Devil’ alongside Corbett and Chris Madine, He also contributed to a second song on the EP titled ‘Yebo/Sema’.
  5.  Masego and Jamaican producer J.L.L., whose 2014 beat was sampled on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ (CLB) album, will both share a part of the victory if the Canadian rapper wins in the Best Rap Album category.
  6. In the Best Global Music Album category, Nigerian star WizKid is among five nominees for his album ‘Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition’.  The project features contributions from Jamaican artists Damian Jr. Gong’ Marley on the song ‘Blessed’, and rising artist Projexx, on the song ‘True Love’ with Tay Iwa.

A celebratory congratulations goes out to all the Jamaican artistes who were nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy awards. The final round of voting for the 64th Annual Grammy awards will begin on December 6th, 2021, and end on January 5th, 2022.

Jamaica’s Protoje and Konshens Releases Brand New Albums

From new albums to new releases, Jamaica’s music scene has been buzzing quite a lot lately with some of the top Reggae and Dancehall stars dropping their brand new albums that fans just can’t seem to get enough of.

First up, we have one of Reggae’s music most popular stars Oje Ken Ollivierre, who goes by the stage name ‘Protoje’. With over 15 years in the game, the ‘Who knows’ singer is considered one of Jamaica’s most influential artistes. Recently, Protoje released the deluxe edition of his 2020 album, ‘In Search of Lost time’ where he also executive produced and co-produced (5) out of the (13) original tracks featured.

The new extended project includes a brand new artwork and (3) additional tracks with two of which are remixes. The new tracks include ‘Still Royal’ which features Popcaan, Pa Salieu and Toddla T; ‘Still Blooming’ which features Lila Iké  and IzyBeats, and lastly a track called ‘Righteous’ which was released with a brand new visualizer directed by Yannick Reid (see below).

Shifting to Dancehall, it seems like Konshens has been keeping himself quite busy as he recently announced that he has an upcoming album on the way called ‘Red Reign’. The album will be released later this year but the lead single ‘Can’t Stay Sober’ is officially out now and touches on the issue of using alcohol or drugs to self-medicate.

Konshens, who over the years has given us some of our favorite dancehall hits such as ‘Gyal a Bubble’, ‘Bad Gyal, ‘Bruk off Yuh Back’ and more says that the single neither advocates for, or condemns, drinking and drug use. However, the track reflects on the toll that the pandemic has taken on society, and the steps he and others are taking to cope after taking stock of his own drinking. He even admitted to himself that he might even have a problem while sharing:

“The current climate of the world is forcing you into a state where it’s almost like you can’t stay sober. I’m not encouraging it, I’m acknowledging the reality. This is a stressful time, and people are searching for an escape.”

Seems like Konshens will be getting real and raw with this new project and we are definitely here for it.
Moving onto more updates on new album releases, it seems like congratulations are in order for Sean Paul, whose new Dancehall album ‘Live N Livin’ debut at No. 9 on the Billboard Reggae Chart. Not only has his new album debut on the Billboard charts, but his album ‘Sean Paul’s ‘Dutty Classics Collection’ also re-entered the chart at the No. 3 positions this week thanks to the promotional marketing for himself and his new album over the last few weeks.

According to Dancehallmag.com, the Temperature singer is also expected to release another album, ‘Scorcher’ in May under the auspices of Island Records. The LP is carded to feature American singer Gwen Stefani, Sia, Shenseea, Jada Kingdom, Stylo G, and more.

In other related Billboard charting news, it seems like Shaggy is going steady at No. 2 on the charts with his album ‘Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection’, while the legend himself Bob Marley, continues his reign at No.1 for 63 weeks consecutively with his album ‘Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers’.

CEH Musical Picks Of The Week

Busy Signal: Mr Versatile Extraordinaire

Although dancehall is his foundation and base, Reanno Gordon a.k.a Busy Signal has been busy, throughout his career incorporating other genres into his music. Ever since the release of his mega successful album D.O.B., the versatility of Busy Signal was apparent. On that album Busy Signal fused R&B and dancehall in ‘Nightshift’ and ‘One More Night’; two of his biggest and most recognizable songs to date. These demonstrated his singing ability and made him a superstar in the Caribbean and beyond overnight. In that album, Busy, as he is affectionately called, ventured even into Latin music to create a very successful track aptly called ‘Busy Latino’. Furthermore, to show that he is a man of many talents, he included a soca track called ‘Pincante’ in the album.

Busy is no stranger to soca, in 2011 he released ‘Touch De Road’ and ‘Get Outta My Way’ and as these were well received in Trinidad, he continues to make Soca music and has become a regular on the Soca Scene. He is now highly sort after for collaborative work by many Soca artist. One such successful collab is ‘Touchdown’ with Kerwin De Bois. Other top Soca artist who has worked with Busy includes Machel Montano and Skinny Fabulous. In 2018 he did a remix of Ravi BStart Over’ adding his distinct voice to what is a chutney soca song; elevating it to another level.

Like many secular reggae and dancehall artist, Busy Signal decided early in his career to add some gospel and spiritual songs to his music catalog. ‘Why I sing,’ ‘Peace Reign,’ Praise and Worship’, and ‘Jah Love’, all display another side of his musical artistry and give us a glimpse into his other side.

With an eclectic ear for rhythms, Busy Signal, after touring many African countries, started to incorporate indigenous African rhythms in his music. Like everything Busy touches, these Afrobeat releases have been quite successful and has placed him in a class by himself. The most popular are ‘Professionally’, ‘Bou Yah’ and the recently released ‘Expensive Order’. He has also participated in the remix of Nigerian PatorankingMy Woman’ featuring Machel Montano of Trinidad & Tobago and Wande Coal of Nigeria; this has become a mega hit.

It is in the telling of the story of the Gambler, a country western song made popular by country superstar Kenny Rogers, where Busy Signal versatility shines. Yes Mr. versatile dabbled in country music too. He was part of the collaborative album ‘Reggae’s Gone Country’ in which he sang ‘The Gambler’. In his cover of that song, his tone, articulation and connection with the lyrics rivals that of Kenny Rogers who is one of the best country singers ever. This is demonstrative of Busy signal singing ability and versatility.

Busy Signal continues to expand his appeal through collaboration and experimenting with other genres. Working with the rock artist No Doubt on the track ‘Push And Shove’ featuring Major Lazer (an American electronic dance music trio) exposed him to a different set of fans. Additionally, he was featured in a dance track call ‘Jump’ by Major Lazer. He also played around with hip hop in the 2014 track ‘All in One’ where he freestyled to the beat of – Biggie Smalls [Notorious] – ‘Juicy’Puff Daddy [Diddy] & Nas – ‘You Can Hate Me Now’50 Cent – ‘Go Shorty – It’s Your Birthday’.

Busy continues to dominate the dancehall charts this year with singles from his soon to be release album ‘Parts of the Puzzle’. Recent hits include, ‘Stay So,’ ‘One Way’ and newest release, ‘Got To Tell You.’ But the song that has stood out to me is ‘Great Men’ where Busy came home to an unadulterated reggae beat to deliver conscious lyrics that praises some of the black freedom fighters of our time. This song is an indication of his maturity and evolution.

Busy Signal is now a trend setter in Caribbean music, We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub hope that he recognizes the significance of this role and endeavors not only to innovate but to take the music to higher heights placing emphasis on positive lyrics. We wish Busy all the best with the release of his new album.

The Versatility of Busy Signal
