CPL 2019 Finals: Barbados Tridents Wins their 2nd title

With emotions still high and cricket lovers reminiscing about the epic season just witnessed, many may have been too caught up during the matches to notice some of the other benefits that the biggest party in sports brings each year. CPL is now the number one sporting event in the Caribbean with games being played each year in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados and St. Kitts and Nevis. Besides reviving the once declining interest in cricket in the region, it brings a much needed economic boost to these countries, especially the country hosting the final match.

CPL Cricket Lovers supporting their teams

CPL 2019 finals, played on Saturday 12th October at the Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad and Tobago, turned out to be a thriller with fans turning out in their numbers to witness the spectacular showdown between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Barbados Tridents.  Following this year’s historic season of the CPL matches, the divide across people in the region was clear with many deciding who they would be backing after their original teams were eliminated. It seemed like the overall support was split 50/50 as the Barbados vs. Guyana rivalry took place.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Tridents scored a total of 171/ 6 in 20 overs. Many thought that this, while a formidable total, was insufficient for the mighty warriors to make. But as fate would have it, the Warriors lost wickets at regular intervals and struggled to only score 144/9 in 20 overs. What a heart-breaking loss for Guyana, as the Warriors suffered their first lost for the entire season and their fifth loss in a CPL finals. The Tridents winning the finals by 27 runs, earned their 2nd CPL title since 2015. Supporters cheered on as Jonathan Carter was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ title and Hayden Walsh was declared the ‘Man of the Tournament’.

According to the official CPLT20 site, after conducting an Economic Impact Assessment (EIA), it was determined that there has been a continual major financial boost for the region during the CPL tournaments from Investors, Tourism, Hotel & Travel accommodations, Media value during TV and Digital media broadcasts, Fan attendance and also the staggering rise in job creations in recent years. Not to mention the overall unification and incomparable excitement from cricket supporters throughout the region, who continue to show the cricket world with each match played why it is called the biggest party in sports.

Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to congratulate the Barbados Tridents for taking home the HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2019 title.

CPL 2019 Highlights: Barbados & Guyana to Faceoff in Finals

And then there were two!

We don’t know about you, but we’re still recovering from the Caribbean Premier League 2019 Playoffs. This week was filled with nerve-wracking anticipation that came to a bitter-sweet end, sealing the faith of two teams that would be facing off in this year’s CPL finals.

It was no surprise to cricket fans when the Guyana Amazon Warriors became the first to secure their spot in the finals. After remarkably securing a 10 match winning streak this year, which is rare for a T20 franchise league, they left cricket supporters wondering which team will showdown in the finals.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana Amazon Warriors

This week’s playoffs commenced on Sunday 6th October, 2019 at 11am at the Providence Stadium, Guyana with the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots competing against the defending champions, the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR). The Patriots fans were left heartbroken as the Knight Riders eliminated their chances of a spot in the finals after winning by 6 wickets, scoring a total of 128/4 in 18.4 overs while the Patriots scored 125/7 in 20 overs. This win also restored faith for the TKR supporters since they have been on a losing streak for some time now.

With the decision now down to the defending champions, the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Barbados Tridents. The first Qualifier, having took place the same day and location was played at 3.30pm and gave the Guyana Amazon Warriors yet another win as the competed against the Barbados Tridents. Winning by 30 runs and scoring a total of 218/ 7 in 20 overs, the Amazon Warriors continued their dominance throughout the playoffs, while the Tridents putting up a good fight scored a total of 188/8 in 20 overs.

The 2nd Qualifier however, left the CPL planet speechless with an unexpected turn of events as the defending champions was unable to secure their spot in the finals, ending their hopes of winning their 4th consecutive title. Disappointed TKR supporters left the Brian Lara Stadium on Thursday 10th October, 2019 after the Barbados Tridents reigned victorious over the Riders, eliminating them from the finals and securing their spot to compete against the Amazon Warriors.

The Riders won the toss and elected to field while the Tridents scored a total of 160/6 in 20 overs. Consumed with ambivalence, patrons cheering the Riders onto victory were disappointed in the end when they lost scoring a total of 148 in 19.3 overs. This gave the Tridents their entry to the finals, which will be their first since 2015.

With emotions and predictions now being reconsidered, in a little over 24 hours at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy the 2019 Caribbean Premiere League winner will be decided. The final match will be played on Saturday 12th October, 2019 and kicks off at 5pm. Do you think that the most consistent team thus far, the Guyana Amazon Warriors will be able to secure their first title after finishing runners up in four previous finals? Or do you think the Barbados Tridents stand a chance at securing their second title? Who will you be supporting? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for our CPL Finals coverage.

CPL 2019 Highlights: Guyana Amazon Warriors leading with 7 Consecutive Wins

The Guyana Amazon Warriors continues to dominate the CPL 2019 after securing their 7th consecutive win.

This magnificent victory took place on Wednesday 25th September, 2019 at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, Gros Islet in St. Lucia as the Warriors faced off against the St. Lucia Zouks during Match #21. The Zouks won the toss and elected to bat scoring a total of 161/ 7 in 20 overs, however the Guyana Amazon Warriors winning by 8 wickets scored 162/2 in 18.2 overs.

The ‘Man of the Match’ title was awarded to West Indian first-class cricketer Brandon King whose unbeaten 81 helped secure this amazing win for the Warriors. According to INews Guyana, the Warriors are assured of a top-two finish and with it a place in the first qualifier for a place in the final, with the safety net of a second chance should they lose that one.

With the Warriors currently in position #1 and accounted for in the playoff, the big question cricket fans are asking right now is what is the current standing of the remaining CPL competing teams?

According to the 2019 Caribbean Premier League Table, presently in 2nd place is defending champions and three-time CPL winners, the Trinbago Knight Riders. The Riders remain 2nd despite having now gone three matches without a victory after winning their first four with a total of 9 points. They are still carded to compete in three remaining matches against the Guyana Amazon Warriors on the 30th September and 4th October, and the Barbados Tridents on the 2nd October before the playoffs officially begins.

St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots
In the 3rd position, with a total of 8 points and nine matches played is the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots. Securing four wins thus far, the Patriots is carded to play one more on match Saturday 28th September 2019 against the Barbados Tridents at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.

After struggling with four defeats in their seven matches played, previous CPL champion- the Barbados Tridents recently secured their first win on home soil this season bring their total to three wins and placing them in the 4th position with a total of 4 points. In their remaining three matches, they will face off against the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots on the 28th September, the St. Lucia Zouks on the 29th September and the Trinbago Knight Riders on the 2nd October.

In the 5th position with a total of 5 points after winning only two matches out of the seven matches played in the league is the St. Lucia Zouks. With two more remaining games to be played, the Zouks need to win both to have a decent chance of staying there. Their remaining matches includes competing against the Jamaica Tallawahs on 27th September and the Barbados Tridents on 29th September, 2019.

And lastly, previous two-times CPL tournament winner- the Jamaica Tallawahs who have been struggling to secure wins in this year’s edition of the CPL. With just two more games remaining for the Tallawahs, their next match taking place on 27th September against the St. Lucia Zouks in St. Lucia is a must-win affair if they have hopes of making it to this year’s playoff.

As the 7th edition of CPL culminates, who do you have your money on to take home this year’s title? CPL The Biggest Party In Sports

Touted as one of the biggest parties in sports, the CPL (Caribbean Premier League) came to a close last Sunday at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad with the defending champs, Trinbago Knight Riders, once again completely dominating Guyana’s Amazon Warriors to retain their CPL title. The Knight Riders have had 3 titles in 4 years, and show no signs of slowing down. However, we must take time out to shed a tear for the Amazon Warriors, for this was their fourth appearance in a final in only 6 years. Lady luck was truly not on their side.
The CPL over the years has reintroduced the love of cricket to many of us West Indians. After years and years of disappointment coming from our namesake team on the international stage, there was a big need to get the love back into our regional game. CPL saw the void, took up the mantle, added fireworks and music, and ran with it. The experience of the carnival atmosphere along with the biggest names in T20 cricket being on display was always going to be a big draw for our Caribbean crowds, and it has certainly rang true over the years. The Knight Riders have been the dominant force in the franchise from inception; even in the years where they did not win the title, they still performed well, often getting to the semifinal stages. Initially, they had a fierce rivalry with the Barbados Tridents, however more often than not, the Riders would emerge victorious. Other teams like the St. Lucia Stars and St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots have had beautifully exciting matches among themselves over the years, with huge boundary clearing shots, and acrobatic efforts in the field.

Fans enjoying the carnival atmosphere

During the final this time around skipper of Riders, DJ Bravo had won the toss and decide to bowl first, which proved a problem for the Warriors who never really got a good footing in their innings. Scoring 147/9 off their 20 overs, Bravo’s team with the help of a great start from Brendon McCullum and Colin Munro, chased down the total with 2 overs to spare.
During the post-match presentation, captain Bravo had this to say about his team’s efforts and the supporters who following them throughout the series.
“To my team, this victory is for Trinidad and Tobago. In a tournament like this, you can lose close games but we had the best team and we deserved to win…I am happy with the way our team played throughout the tournament. I think the first ball of the day by Ali Khan set the tone for us. Ronchi got them off to a great start but Pierre showed his courage to come back. Colin Munro put an icing on the cake along with Brendon McCullum. They rely heavily on Tahir and Green while opening with the ball. I knew we have the best finishers in the tournament and to win the final by eight wickets, I am really happy for that.”
Compared to last year, the tournament saw a distinctive improvement in the runs scored and the big hitting for which has been missing in previous incarnations. In the 2017 edition, out of 34 matches played, there were only 2 times teams scored over the 200 run mark, while 448 sixes were on display. In stark contrast, this year the 200 run mark was passed 9 times, while a whopping 530 sixes were delivered. This included the highest total in the history of CPL, scored by St. Lucia Stars against Barbados Tridents. Colin Munro from the league champions, Knight Riders, had 13 matches played in which he made over 50 runs six times.
Another CPL has come and gone, and as always it has left its fans with a greater appreciation of the talent we currently have in the Caribbean. Cricket has always been a source of much spirited talk amongst us West Indians, and with the Knight Riders once again beating the competition comprehensively, it will be interesting to see how the teams are shaken up next year to deal with the champions. I fully expect the 2019 season to be another installment filled with passion and fire from the players; spurred on by the roars from the fans.
