Virgin Islander Pumpa Embraces Growing Success of The A List

US Virgin Island raised, Dennis’ Pumpa’ Liburd has been steadily stirring Soca circuits with his hit single ‘The A List.’ The popular single, which is quickly becoming the ultimate waistline starter for female party-goers, has been generating impressive engagement on streaming platforms since its release. With over 330K streams on the digital streaming platform Spotify, ‘The A List’ also peaked in 24 countries on Apple Music and iTunes, securing number one spots on the Reggae charts in the British Virgin Islands in May 2023 and Austria in August 2023.

PUMPA

No newcomer to the entertainment industry, Pumpa who was born in Saint Kitts, is St Croix’s Groovy Soca Monarch 2023, a title he’s previously held. His singing, writing and performing spans almost two decades, with him touring throughout the Caribbean, USA and Europe. Pumpa’s high-energy performances have separated him from many of his counterparts. He leaves a lasting impression throughout his touring and shares, “Even when I am performing for audiences that are unfamiliar with me, I always get feedback about how great and high energy my performances are.”

Pumpa’s performance at the heavily subscribed Stink and Dutty event for Miami Carnival created an uproar, much to the delight of those present. Footage from his performance shows loud cheers and revelry in response to his hit song. As Pumpa’s reach grows, Shazam, one of the most popular music recognition apps, shows ‘The A List’ as #131 on the top 200 chart in Trinidad on October 11th. This serves as an awareness indicator that the song is being enjoyed and heard, but those listening may need to be made aware of the artiste or song’s name.

As Pumpa continues to entertain audiences globally he is focused on penetrating new markets. He is also working on new musical contributions for the St Croix’s upcoming Carnival season.

The song is also supported by an official video which was released on September 28th, 2023.

Road Marches Of 2023

Now that the merry Monarch has wined his way through the Caribbean leaving many in his wake with happy memories and some carrying ‘Carnival Babies’ LOL, let us review the songs that heated up the roads of the different islands and had masqueraders and revelers unapologetically jumping and dancing themselves into a frenzy.

Trinidad and Tobago

In Trinidad and Tobago, the chant of “I not going no small fete, let me extend my apology. Only big fete with big flag, going overhead like canopy.” was heard more than others on February 20-21. Masqueraders and onlookers alike witnessed the way ‘Hard Fete’ by Bunji Garlin commanded the reactions of the listeners; throwing their hands in the air and jumping to the high heavens.

Dominica

Boldly grabbing the title for Road March in the Nature Isle is Mighty D. His energetic ensemble “Talking Dogs” was a favorite from the season which was reflected in the judging! Dominica’s carnival ran from February 20th to the 21st and this year made a return since the pandemic.

US Virgin Islands

Fun fact: Carnival in the US Virgin Islands occurs at different times throughout the year. On the island of St. Thomas, their carnival is celebrated in April/May; on the island of St. John it is celebrated in June/July and in December the island of St. Croix has its celebration! This year, St. Thomas’ Carnival Road March Song was crowned by Karnage with “Shake Up”.

St. Vincent & the Grenadines

St. Vincent & the Grenadines celebrated their carnival from June 30th to July 11th and Fireman Hooper’s Madness had a direct hand in the pot of enjoyment. Undoubtedly he made the road experience tons better and was voted Road March Champion of 2023! This infectious and catchy music ensemble was the reason for women bending over and men as well as women gyrating on each AND every available bumpa.

Saint Lucia

Imran Nerdy, in Saint Lucia, orchestrated a mass Clock Out from work, kickstarting the carnival festivities that spanned from July 1st to the 19th. The Road March champion of Clock Out seamlessly fused classic soca elements with what John-public would like which ultimately proved to be the winning formula!

Barbados

Then there was Quan De Artistes’ contribution to Crop Over, with his hit Waistline. High-energy and infectious it dominated the Barbados soca scene. Waistline proved to be a feel-good story with a catchy beat. On the PTP Riddim, this song from Quan De Artiste has racked up more than 334K views on the artiste’s YouTube channel and it’s not hard to see why.

Antigua and Barbuda

According to Ricardo Drue, “In Antigua, we party different” which he explained in his song Last One Standing. Undoubtedly a whirlwind of energy it is on the Funny Riddim and it made dancing and getting on to the song as automatic as breathing. Easily distinguished by its upbeat rhythm, it became the Road March. Antigua and Barbuda Carnival was celebrated from Thursday 27th July to Tuesday 8th August 2023.

Grenada

Over on the Spice island of Grenada, they had a tie for first place! Grabbing and keeping the hearts of Greandians and visitors were Rabulous with his song ‘Farmer’ and Temptress with her song ‘Toot Toot’. These songs’ popularity was measured by their ability to put you in a chokehold with their ability to create an atmosphere that was happy, euphoric even. Both songs were a staple at shows, parties, and events throughout the carnival season which started as early as July 6th all through August 15th!

These winners embody the essence that is soca music, each done so with their distinctive style. Their songs are poised and some, more than others, have become anthems, a profound mark left on audiences. In 2023 so far, it can be said that a great year of soca music was had and we at Caribbean Entertainment Hub can’t wait to see what will be in store in 2024.

If you’re new to some of these hits, you can get a taste in the playlist below and if you’ve been a lover of the song, tap in for the nostalgia!

Jimmy October Brings “Healing” In 2023

Jimmy October is bringing healing to 2023. That’s literally the title of his latest release “Healing” and this twenty-something year old, Sangre Grande-native is determined to apply his sonic salvation to “the Mother of Carnivals”, Trinidad Carnival 2023, and to the wider world beyond our annual festival and tropical shores.

Jimmy is going places this year, literally! Recent appearances by this multi-talented, self-described New Calypso artiste on Kes’ “Magic” and on the West Coast leg of the band’s 2022 Liki Tiki tour 2022, attracted the attention of music innovator, Byron Kirkland and the Stealth Music Group, who released this statement about October:

“We are excited about our partnership with Jimmy October.  His artistic approach of combining calypso with world music is refreshing.  Jimmy October is a star!  There hasn’t been an artist from the Caribbean with his style/fashion and music sensibilities that has the courage to push and blend genres. Stealth Music Group/UnitedMasters looks forward to helping Jimmy October push his sound to the world.”

Born L’Shun Emmanuel, October admits he couldn’t be more thrilled about all of these developments and says he’s supremely focused on making the most of every opportunity:

“Being able to start the New Year with a new record and a new deal is an amazing feeling.

“I’m excited about my new body of work and grateful for the chance to work with United Masters—a company that so closely matches who I am as an artist. This year, I’ll be releasing more music and performing live at venues around the world: Working with Stealth Music Group and United Masters has given me the opportunity to get my music out into the world. My first single, “Healing” is only a small taste of what I see as an exciting year ahead for all of us as we fly the flag of Trinidad and Tobago higher and higher.”

Having built a following via numerous releases, appearances, and spoken word performances, October delivers a soothing, cleansing, inspiring dose of musical medicine with his first release of 2023. “Healing” is a powerful and melodic mantra sung over a riveting ‘Ampiano-styled’ riddim, produced by Michael “Tano” Montano. Montano’s other 2023 production: the High Street Riddim features Kes’ “Jub Jub”, Patrice’s “Grown Up”, Preedy on “Rocket”, Erphaan Alves on “Lifeline” and Mical Teja on ” Trini Gyal”.

With Kes’ music becoming the most streamed Soca act of 2022 and their second release “Liki Tiki” earning Grammy consideration, DGI is enthusiastic about working with Jimmy October and the Stealth Group.

“‘Jimmy is a musical innovator and there are no limits to what he can create.” Said Damon de Graff and Evan Vogel. “He is a true artist in every sense of the word, and now we’ve found the right home that will help him reach a wider international audience. We are excited to partner with Stealth Music/United Master and give Jimmy the platform to reach a global stage. This carnival season— with all its energy and spirit captured in this first release, “Healing” under our partnership—is a perfect way for us to start off 2023!”
