Teejay Says He’s “A Trini” and Wants Trinidad Carnival Experience in 2027

Jamaican dancehall star Teejay says his connection to Trinidad and Tobago has grown so strong over the years that he sometimes jokingly tells people he is “a Trini.” Speaking with Overtime Media during a recent interview, the UpTop Boss opened up about the support he has consistently received from Trinidad while also revealing that experiencing Trinidad Carnival next year is now high on his list.

“Most times… when people ask me where I’m from, I say I’m Trini,” Teejay said with a laugh, while discussing his relationship with the country. The “Up Top Boss” explained that Trinidad and the wider Caribbean have played a major role in helping dancehall music spread globally.

“Without Jamaica, without the Caribbean, our music wouldn’t even reach places,” he said, highlighting Trinidad, Guyana, The Bahamas and St Vincent among the territories continuing to support the culture.

According to Teejay, songs like Airplane Mode have performed especially well in Trinidad and across the region, in some cases even more than in Jamaica itself. The entertainer also revealed that while he has experienced Jamaica Carnival before, he still feels the need to fully experience Trinidad Carnival from the inside.

“I’ve never experienced Trinidad Carnival and I need to be in Trinidad next year for Carnival,” he stated.

The comments quickly sparked reactions online, especially as the interview also explored growing crossover conversations between dancehall, soca and Trinidad’s evolving Trinibad movement. One of the interview’s biggest talking points came when Teejay publicly expressed interest in collaborating with opposing Trinibad artistes, “Kman 6ixx” and “Medz Boss” despite ongoing tensions surrounding the Trinibad scene.

“Well honestly, me woulda like to do a song with Kman 6ixx,” he stated, “and me woulda like to do a song with Medz Boss, yuh see me.”

Rather than encouraging rivalry, Teejay framed the idea as a message of unity.

“More people need unity right now… love, joy, love life. Let’s live,” he added. “Make we work together. Make we do this for the future, for the youths.”

The interview clips generated heavy engagement across social media, with many Caribbean viewers praising the artiste for encouraging collaboration instead of division. Many others expressed disbelief that it could actually happen also.

Teejay also expressed admiration for soca artistes including Nailah Blackman, Skinny Fabulous and Yung Bredda, while embracing the growing fusion between soca and dancehall culture.

“Soca and dancehall, we are neighbours anyway,” he explained. “It’s just the right thing to have these two genres fused together and create history.”

Beyond the regional conversation, Teejay is preparing for the release of his upcoming album No Distraction, which he described as a return to his core energy.

“We talking about the 2016 Teejay,” he said, describing the project as “hustle mode.”

The album, which he says is about 87 percent complete, is being developed independently following his departure from Warner Records, although he remains aligned with Warner Chappell on the publishing side.

Teejay also recently released the single Perfect Body, a track aimed at empowering women and promoting self-confidence.

“A lot of females out there feel insecure of themselves, so I just want them to know that they’re special,” he shared.

With No Distraction, UpTop Fest and growing Caribbean crossover conversations all in motion, Teejay appears focused on strengthening his connection with the region even further – including a long-awaited trip to experience Trinidad Carnival.

Belizean Political Leader Dr. Moses “Shyne” Barrow Encourages Caribbean Leaders to Invest in Culture

Belizean political leader and hip hop legend, The Honourable, Dr. Moses “Shyne” Barrow has identified Jamaica as a regional blueprint for how culture and governance can work together to build sustainable industry.

Delivering a keynote address titled ‘From Stage to State’ at the Island Music Conference (IMC) in Kingston, Jamaica last week, Barrow urged Caribbean governments to move beyond symbolic support of the arts and toward structured public–private partnerships.

“These conferences are so very important,” he told delegates, describing information exchange as critical in an evolving global music economy.

Responding to a question from Overtime Media about cultural influence as an economic engine, Barrow pointed to Jamaica’s global footprint.

“The work of great musicians such as Bob Marley and Shabba Ranks, as well as the development of Reggae and Dancehall music, has done more for the Jamaican tourism product than anything else,” he said.

According to Barrow, Jamaica exemplifies how successive political administrations, despite partisan rivalry, maintained consistent implementation policies that enabled private-sector investment in the music industry.

“They were fighting each other, but giving the same implementation,” he noted, crediting that alignment for helping Jamaican music achieve unmatched global recognition.

“There is no one in the world who does not know about Jamaica — its music, its food and its culture,” he declared.

Barrow framed his own political evolution as rooted in hip hop’s entrepreneurial DNA. Calling his transition from performer to legislator “quintessential hip-hop,” he cited moguls who expanded beyond music into business and influence, arguing that creative thinkers belong in positions of power.

“We belong in Parliament. We belong in the Cabinet. We belong in the Prime Minister’s office and in the President’s office,” he said.

He also addressed emerging challenges facing the creative sector, particularly artificial intelligence and intellectual property protection.

“We need to protect our rights. We need to protect our work and that can only be legislated,” Barrow warned. “If we don’t get involved in the legislative process, we’re going to wake up one day and find that our rights are gone.”

Calling the human mind “the greatest thing on planet Earth,” he cautioned against overreliance on technology, stressing that creatives must remain central to innovation.

Reflecting candidly on his past — including a decade of incarceration following a 1999 nightclub shooting — Barrow described his return to Belize as a shift toward service.

“By then, my dreams had already come true,” he said. “But when I looked around my country, I saw people still struggling. So I chose a life of service.”

Barrow also revealed plans to return to the stage with a world tour marking the 25th anniversary of his debut album, while reaffirming his commitment to public service.

Closing his address, he challenged Caribbean leaders to diversify the profiles of those shaping legislation.

“The Caribbean’s creative class has already shaped global culture,” he said. “Now we must shape policy.”

Jamaica Leads Regional Shift Toward Institutionalizing The Creative Economy

Jamaica is positioning its creative economy not only as a cultural asset, but as a strategic engine for tourism, global branding and long-term economic growth.

Addressing delegates last Wednesday at the Jamaica Creative Career Expo – held in collaboration with the Island Music Conference (IMC) at Kingston’s Courtleigh Auditorium, then Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia “Babsy” Grange underscored a decisive shift in how the sector is being treated at the policy level.

“The creative economy is no longer informal… it is strategic,” she declared, emphasizing that strong cultural institutions and modern governance frameworks must underpin the industry’s continued expansion.

For a country whose global reputation has been shaped by music, sport and cultural exports, the message signals consolidation rather than reinvention. The focus, Minister Grange suggested, is now on ownership, intellectual property and infrastructure.

“The future of music is not only about performing or producing — it is about ownership,” she said, pointing to publishing, distribution and intellectual property as key drivers of sustained wealth creation in the modern music business.

Her framing of the government’s role was equally deliberate: not interference, but enablement

“Government must ensure that the infrastructure is in place to enable the industry,” she noted — a position that resonates strongly in a region where creative communities have historically operated with limited structural support.

Minister Grange remained engaged throughout the day’s proceedings, interacting with students and industry stakeholders alike, reinforcing a broader vision of culture as economic infrastructure — and, by extension, a pillar of destination development.

Founded by diamond-selling global superstar Orville “Shaggy” Burrell in collaboration with artiste manager/ industry shaper, Sharon Burke and media personality Judith Bodley, the Island Music Conference has evolved into a platform where policy, private sector investment and creative entrepreneurship intersect.

For tourism stakeholders, the alignment is significant. As global travelers increasingly seek authentic cultural immersion, conferences such as IMC position Jamaica not only as a leisure destination but as a regional hub for music business innovation and creative industry leadership.

Across the Caribbean, governments are reassessing culture as a development lever capable of driving exports, employment and global influence. Jamaica appears intent on leading that charge — blending creative excellence with institutional support to strengthen its competitive edge in the global cultural marketplace.

Just last month, Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Culture and Community Development, Michelle Benjamin, declared her intent to evolve and enhance the cultural sector to become a greater contributor to the national economy — echoing a broader regional recalibration.

Panels on Influencer Entrepreneurship, New Rules for Marketing, The Power of Global Radio Play, Breaking Into Publishing and The Power of the Producer informed the packed auditorium throughout the day, and Minister Grange remained present until the very end.

Freelance photojournalist and Overtime Media’s Managing Director, Nigel Telesford, attended the conference and also hosted the panel on Breaking Into Publishing, featuring Ethan Baer of Warner Chappell Music, Sapna Lal of The Lal Firm LLC and Jon Baker of Geejam Studios.

Vybz Kartel Cleared For One Caribbean Music Festival In Trinidad

Dancehall megastar, Vybz Kartel (aka Adidja Palmer) has been cleared to arrive and perform in Trinidad ahead of the One Caribbean Unity Music Festival scheduled for Saturday night at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Sources close to the organising committee of Jacho Entertainment told Overtime Media that the “God Is The Greatest” singer was officially cleared to enter the country and perform on Saturday. The official letter stamped by the Ministry of National Security and dated as of May 26, 2025, is labelled as Form 17 from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is subtitled “Immigration Regulations” and “Permit Issued By The Minister Under Section 10 (1) of the Act 22/2025 reads:

“This permit enables Mr Adidja Azim Palmer Holder of Jamaican Passport No. (XyZ123) issued on August 12, 2024, to enter and remain in Trinidad and Tobago for a period of seven (7) days.”
The permit further outlines conditions under which Palmer can do radio interviews (between 9 am – 12 noon and 1 pm to 3 pm), prohibits the trending artiste from participating in any group, community or official “Crime Awareness Functions” or meetings and asks that his performance repertoire be adapted to “exclude material that may be considered offensive for example the song ‘Good Like Jesus'”. The permit also further states that Palmer “must not communicate any words or engage in any activity which may likely be construed as promoting a gang, contrary to the provision of the Anti-Gang Act”.
Digital Marketing Lead for the One Caribbean Unity Music Festival, Jonathan Gomez told Overtime Media that the clearance “paves the way for the top trending event of the weekend to welcome the top trending artiste”.
He said:
“The World Boss has now been officially cleared to arrive and perform in Trinidad, so all roads lead to the Queen’s Park Savannah this Saturday night, where Vybz Kartel will deliver an electrifying performance, alongside some of the nation and the region’s top acts. Tickets are still available at all advertised outlets and from our online providers. Kartel returns to the stage in Trinidad this Saturday for the first time in 15 years, so this historical night is not to be missed. See you all there!”

Dexter Daps Saves The Night as Keyshia Cole Disappoints At R&B Brunch In Trinidad

Keyshia Cole and Jamaican Dancehall crooner, Dexta Daps (Louis Grandison Jr.) were billed as the headline acts for the inaugural event, and several thousand patrons assembled, all expecting what was advertised: a full hour performance from each of the two stars. However, American R&B Singer Keyshia Cole left the stage abruptly and without explanation after singing only three songs last Saturday night. Her brief appearance and sudden departure effectively left patrons of the first-ever “R&B Brunch” event in Trinidad confused and disappointed.

Cole posted on her Instagram page earlier in the day about waking up hungover and visiting a local KFC restaurant on her way from the Piarco airport just after 2 pm. After the event, Cole’s Instagram page read:
“I have to come back and do a real show. I was only asked to do 3!!! And that’s not ok, you guys wanted and EXPECTED MORE 😥 I’m so sad.”

Scheduled and advertised to take the stage at 8 pm, Cole did not arrive at the venue until 9.45 and only appeared onstage just after 10 pm. Following her initial fifteen-minute appearance, there was confusion throughout the venue as she returned to her executive dressing room with no explanation to the assembly of approximately 3000 patrons.

Scorch Founder, Kwesi Hopkinson, who also celebrated his birthday at the event, told Overtime Media yesterday that their contract with the booking agent was for 45 minutes, but it was revealed after the fiasco onstage that the agent had only paid Cole for a twenty-minute set. On the night, Cole was reportedly subsequently paid an undisclosed amount backstage and returned to the stage briefly during Dexta Daps’ set. The American singer, songwriter, TV personality, and actress also used one expletive during her initial appearance, but had the ladies singing along word for word.

Jamaican singjay Dexta Daps saved the night with his dynamic onstage presence, charismatic and alluring performance, and flawless renditions of his well-known catalogue. Crooning out the ladies’ favorite hits such as “Breaking News”, “Owner”, “Call Me”, “No Underwear”, “Wifi”, “God Got Me” and “Seven Eleven” among others, Daps had the ladies screaming and singing along, as he also shared a few roses and wished the audience, the nation and even his fellow headliner, a Happy Mother’s Day.
“I don’t wanna take up too much of your time and I don’t wanna do too much,” said Daps to Cole onstage, while down on one knee before her, “but we are pulling up on Mother’s Day, so I just want to say Happy Mother’s Day to you. Love you and wish you all the best!”

Earlier on that night,  the local contingent enjoyed their fair share of time on stage despite a somewhat late start to the entertainment program with Soca star and Freestyle Champion, “Preedy” churning the assembly into a Carnival frenzy for a few minutes amidst the tranquil R&B atmosphere. Complete with a new venue and a cosy layout in the savannah area opposite QRC, as well as endless delectable dishes and bars galore to supply all needs and desires, the event also featured performances from rising star, “Coutain”, as well as singer/songwriter, “Hey Choppi”; “Jimmy October”, “Mela Caribe”, “Erphaan Alves”; Reggae singer, “Jamelody” and others.

The event ended just after 1 am with memes and comments flooding across timelines on social media about Cole’s abbreviated appearance:
“Keisha pulls a Stuart Young!” said one female. “She said they only booked her for 3 songs, blame y’all’s promoters, not Keyshia.” Said one of her fans. “I won’t doubt it’s cause she cuss. It’s against the law.” Said another. To help you decide for yourself, we include a copy of the contract, with some words blocked out, as given to us by the promoter.

Soca King, Machel Montano Says No To Soca Competition!

Five-time Power and two-time Groovy International Soca Monarch Winner, Machel Montano believes that the time for competition has passed and that more collaborations are needed to take Soca music to greater heights. Montano was asked about the recent announcement of a new Soca competition coming on stream for Trinidad Carnival 2025, while at the official launch of the Pineapple Riddim held at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Wednesday morning.

The veteran entertainer took his time to respond, starting with the quip:
“What gets you here wouldn’t get you there! Ahm, there is a desire by some people to go back: to go back to the glory days of the Soca Monarch competition, but in life, we doh get to go back. We only go forward. I must commend Mr William Munro for his contribution, so give him a round of applause.
“In my humble opinion, Soca Monarch has done a lot for us as artistes who were rising, but in this time of MONK – The Movement of Now Knowing, we need to know what we need to do now and in my humble opinion instead of competing against each other, we need to collaborate more.”

The Pineapple Riddim marks the first-ever partnership between Dwayne “DJ” Bravo’s 47 Productions and Machel Montano’s Monk Music and features powerhouse artistes: Machel Montano (“Wah We Doin”), Patrice Roberts (“Tun Up”), Lyrikal (“Carnival Meeting”), Rupee (“My Kinda Gyal”) and rising star, Ronicia “47Ronzy” Joseph (“Come Here”). A release from Crystal Clear Solutions given to media at the event stated that “the riddim delivers a fresh yet nostalgic sound, blending groovy Soca with irresistible Carnival energy”.

Montano referenced the rise of Afrobeats and Reggaeton music, which are both comparable to the sound and speed of Soca, and advised “in his humble opinion” that our focus needs to be on making Soca a global product. He said:
“I don’t personally feel we need a competition right now to take us to where we need to go. It will happen organically again at some point, but right now we have Afrobeats becoming the most popular music in the world and it sounds like Soca. Afrobeat is right behind Reggaeton music, which is doing some of the biggest numbers in the world with artistes like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and others – and it sounds like Soca! So what are we missing to take our music to the next level?
“We need to focus on making Soca music a global product.” He advised, answering his own query. “Beyond the competition, we should be focusing on the quality of our music; the quality of our writing; the quality of our marketing, and most importantly, the quality of our message – to inspire the young people, to inspire the nation and we know that where two or more are gathered in HIS name we can accomplish a lot.”

Montano joined Bajan bard, Rupert “Rupee” Clarke; Cricket Icon, Dwayne Bravo; US-based talent, Devon “Lyrikal” Martin, and rising star, Ronicia “47Ronzy” Joseph. Joseph was discovered via Bravo’s digital app investment, Collab,r and is being managed by him also. Soca Queen, Patrice Roberts is also featured on the riddim, but was out of the country and sent a short video recording which was played at the event. The launch attracted a number of industry professionals, stakeholders, and media personnel and featured pineapple cocktails by Verve Creations for Angostura White Oak, as well as tasty edibles by Shafek’s Catering and an open bar courtesy Armando Bar Services, LED and graphic printed promotional tees, luminous signs, digital screens and trendy decor by Strictly FX. Montano and Bravo engaged in a friendly arm wrestling contest refereed by acclaimed producer, Kevin “Stadic” Charles to close the event and the elder singer defeated the younger cricket star and was knighted as the new “Champion” by attendees in reference to Bravo’s hit single of the same name.

Vybz Kartel Spreads Christmas Cheer In Trinidad

Dancehall King Adidja “Vybz Kartel” Palmer has partnered with American Stores and the ‘Help Me Help You Foundation’ in Trinidad to bring some “Christmas Cheer” to the people of T&T. From 1 pm on Friday, December 20th, about two hundred persons in need of appliances, toys, and even some foodstuffs came to the St James branch of American Stores on the corner of Agra St and Western Main Road where over $100,000 worth of merchandise were distributed.

While recently in Trinidad to launch his business collaboration with Angostura Limited, Palmer visited American Stores to implement this charitable initiative and commissioned Ornella Luces and her ‘Help Me Help You Foundation’ to organize and manage the philanthropic effort.

“I get nuff love everytime I forward Trinidad. Mi feel like it was only right I do something for my people here. Trini people love Vybz Kartel & Vybz Kartel love Trini people. So mi link with Amir from American Stores fi do a giveaway of some appliances and things on my behalf to show some love and appreciation. Nella coordinated and managed the rest of everything and its in full swing!” Palmer said.

Persons in need of appliances and other items were required to sign up and participate in a brief interview via phone or messages to be eligible. The Foundation’s committee did their due diligence to ensure that those most in need and deserving were the ones receiving the assistance from the initiative.

Chair of the ‘Help Me Help You Foundation’, Ornella Luces said her organization will also be giving stuff to some of the orphanages and needy homes and welcomed other corporate and charitable organizations to get involved and share with those who are less fortunate. She said:
“This was all his (Kartel) idea, as we normally do some charity around this time but not on such a large scale. However, I was happy to manage it for him and Amir Maybodi, who is the Managing Director of American Stores Ltd. gave me the money to get all these other things and we managed the screening process online via our social media pages”.

“Kartel has been a family friend for many years so I’m happy to help him with this worthy endeavor and looking forward to helping the people who really need it in these tough times.” she went on to say.

Kes 2025 Carnival Release “Cocoa Tea” Topping Charts and Streaming Platforms In The Caribbean and Beyond

Kes’ first release for Carnival 2025, “Cocoa Tea” has topped the US iTunes Reggae chart and several streaming platforms, charts, and playlists in countries all around the region and the US. The song was released on November 15th just before the band of brothers from south Trinidad embarked on their third annual US East Coast Tour. As the tour rocked packed venues in Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia; Silver Springs, Maryland; Norfolk, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia from November 24 to December 5, the lyric video for the song on the band’s YouTube channel skyrocketed to 1,000,000 views in the first two weeks as the song got added to thousands of streaming playlists.

On Sunday, December 8th, Ineffable Records President, Adam Gross posted an update detailing statistics showing the song’s mainstream appeal and interest growing rapidly in less than a month and without an official music video.

“Cocoa Tea came out three weeks ago and the numbers that it is doing are unprecedented for any Soca record and are the best numbers any Kes song has ever done out the gate, as it looks to hopefully be the biggest Kes record of all time!” He enthused.

“The song has three million plays including 1.9 million on YouTube over 400 000 on Spotify and almost 500 000 on Apple Music. On YouTube, it is still doing over 125, 000 plays a day without an official music video. It’s number three on Toronto’s local pulse Spotify chart and sits at the top of Shazam charts in 20 different places.”

Written by Kees Dieffenthaller, hit producer, Michael “Tano” Montano, and Reigning Trinidad and Tobago Road March King/ songwriter, Mical Teja, with background vocals by Tano, rising star, Denzil “Coutain” and Terri Lyons, Gross added that:

“Cocoa Tea” is currently number one in Trinidad, Guyana, Antigua, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, the British Virgin Islands Dominica, and Anguilla among several other countries it’s in the top 10 streamed songs as well. The song is going viral on Tik Tok where it has been used in 66,000 different videos including 32,000 using the original sound. All of that together bringing in 61 million views on the song on Tik Tok,” he listed.
